Do coaches actually try to win these games?

I thought the purpose was to basically scrimmage against another team so you can get solid reps in for everyone on the roster.

The reason is to trim the fat before the season starts. There really isn't a reason to play #1s in the 1st game or the last preseason game but that is just my opinion.
