You know that Kobe's contract is only 2 years, right. Once he retires, that opens up $24 million in cap space. Add the $9 million that Nash's expiring contract gives them after next season and that's $33 million off the books before any other contracts that may be expiring at that time.

The assumption that Kobe will retire I think is not a good one. He's the ultimate competitor.......he's going to believe he can play at a high level when he's 80. He isn't going to go silently into the night is my guess. The real question is are the Lakers going to be willing to let him go and not resign him.

I agree re: trusting Phil, however, if he isn't able to put together a contending roster pretty quickly, he will begin to lose some of the "it" factor.

Also, you can't assume that he will just be able to trade players. Amare, for example, is injury prone, is on the down side of his career and has a big contract. Who's going to want him unless it's a team looking to acquire an expiring contract for the future cap space and what are the Knicks likely to get back?

Trading Bargiani might get them something, but nothing that is going to make them contenders any sooner than just waiting out some of those bad contracts.

You make a good point, I wouldn't want Amare. But I guess the point is he is a savvy guy, but we will see how he pans out. Could be another Riley.

Speaking of coffee, they built a Dutch Bros near me and I decided to try it. They put a boatload of cream and sugar in it and I didn't even ask for it. Seems like a place where teens and women who like overly sweet coffee get their fix from.
