I think Groh was just in denial about the defensive scheme he was trying to run. Only a handful of programs can run and recruit the guys to play a true 3-4 defense and be top 10 every year. GT can get some good players..but not Alabama players.

I agree, Johnson may be on his way out if he can't get it done and get this team to a decent bowl..which would suit me fine. I hate the fucking triple option..it always gives our team fits even though we usually come out on top.

I'd like to see Johnson go just because he seems like he's a real dickhead. Every time I see him I wish someone would punch him in the face. Never met the man in my life, he could be a real angel, but for some reason he just seems like a dick.

As for Groh...LOL. I remember during the VT/GT game earlier this year ESPN's crew kept fawning over how great a coach he was. Oops

I think Groh's fault isn't the 3-4 itself, but rather his and his players execution of it. He seems to prefer a read-and-react style of play, when others are much more aggressive. That style can work, but I'd guess that it requires a lot of skill and training to make it work 100%. That is a tough task in a world with 5 years per player max, thus leading his inconsistent career. Other coaches seem to better harness their players instincts to think faster. Had he adjusted the defense to suit his players natural instincts and abilities, I think he'd have had greater success.

Al had a couple good defenses at Virginia. 2004, in particular, was extremely competitive. It looks like London's defense has lapsed alittle with the move to the 4-3, although I think its fair he deserves a little more time to finish transitioning his system in there.

I've never agreed with the notion that it's too hard to run a 3-4 in college ball. The elite programs can run anything, but the 3-4 is just another defense. I get the argument that a massive nose tackle makes the 3 man front a beast, but not every successful 3 man front has had a Terrance Cody.

Georgia runs a 3-4, recruiting the same guys as Groh. Stanford ran a 3-4 for a while (don't know if they still do). Cal runs it now. All of those teams have had top 25 defenses under those systems. WVU had a ton of success with a 3-3-5, as has Temple and BYU defenses (add that Boise isn't afraid of any formation- see 3-4 vs Georgia ).

As for being an annual top 10 defense, those above have had good seasons, but only half have appeared in the top ten, admittedly. With that said, I contend that those schools improved their defense more than what they'd have achieved in a standard 4-3 defense. Further, only 6 teams have five or more top 10 total defense seasons in the last decade (what I'd say is as close to what you're really looking for with "every year" as reasonable). LSU, Ohio State, Florida, Bama, and Auburn, again could recruit and run virtually any defense and be successful. That leaves a sample size of Virginia Tech as the one school in the last decade that comes close to being in the top 10 every year that runs a 4-3 because they can't recruit like Alabama.

This year, in a moment of absolute madness, I changed my background to the Black Pro Combat unis... I did so just before the Pitt game (wanted a dark background). I should have changed it then... what was I thinking.

My history with the Pro Combat Black Unis thus far...

• Wore it to Boise
• Wore it to last year's Ravens vs. Skins Preseason game to cheer on Tyrod. Didn't have a Tyrod jersey so I wore the black one just to be sort of Ravensey (black) & Tech... Ryan Williams was hurt for the season that night.
• I didn't wear it, but the two idiot friends I sat with at the Cinncy game both wore the Black Pro Combat. And? We lost.
• Still haven't changed my background - We've lost to UNC (first time since joining the ACC right?) and RW is out for the season again.

I need a change. Fast. All I can find is pixelated shitty versions of the sunset pic. Need help.
