Meaning they're in shock? Or scrambling to sign him?

The majority of reactions I saw were that of pure shock and befuddlement that they would make that move without much notice.

I considered Flynn to almost be a lock for the Dolphins. The fact that Philbin isn't going after Flynn has to say something...maybe he's not that good?

then i hope he goes to seattle. would be nice to have two not so great qb's in our division. the lambs still need to surround bradford with some talent, so they're a couple years away

Expect Skins to set the pace
Dan Snyder poised to leave mark in free agency; QB trickle-down should intrigue
Originally Published: March 13, 2012

Last summer, free agency was thrown together late because of the lockout.

Even though teams have had an extra two weeks to prepare, free agency 2012 has the same feel. The $120.6 million cap number wasn't circulated until Sunday, 48 hours before the start of free agency. The Cowboys and Redskins were docked a combined $46 million for previous salary-cap violations, and the money was redistributed Monday at about $1.6 million per team.

Tenders to restricted free agents were being given at the last minute and a handful of teams were scrambling to get under the salary cap. Free agency officially begins at 4 p.m. ET Tuesday, and teams are bracing for chaos.

More than 420 players are expected to hit the market, although a bunch will likely re-sign Tuesday morning. Here are the five things to watch in what will be a wild free-agent ride.

1. Good luck competing against Dan Snyder: Redskins owner Dan Snyder rarely loses a bidding war in which he holds some cards. Look what happened last week. The Browns had two first-round picks and more to offer the St. Louis Rams to move up to the draft's No. 2 spot in order to take Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III. Still, Snyder kept raising the stakes and ended up getting the No. 2 pick by offering three first-round choices and a second-rounder.

Because good cap management allowed the Redskins to move $13.36 million of last year's cap space into this year, Snyder will be a big player in free agency. Getting Griffin to be his quarterback will make him only hungrier and more aggressive going after free agents. And with no first-round picks in 2013 and 2014, Snyder has even more incentive to go after free agents.

That news should strike fear into the hearts of teams such as Chicago, which will likely go after Chargers receiver Vincent Jackson. Watch for the Redskins to target Jackson, Broncos wide receiver Eddie Royal, Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan and others. Snyder and the Redskins suffered a big blow Monday when the league took back $36 million of cap room for cap moves made in 2010, but he'll find a way to get whom he wants in free agency. Despite the cap hit, he's a player.

2. The post-Peyton Manning sweepstakes: Manning has dominated the headlines, but his signing will cause a trickle-down effect on the free-agent market. Packers backup Matt Flynn is the top free agent after Manning. If the Dolphins can't land Manning, they will go after Flynn. The Seahawks and Browns will be in the mix on Flynn. If Manning goes to Arizona, that could lead to Kevin Kolb's release. The Browns might be after him. The Seahawks might consider him, too. Kyle Orton remains the next option for a team that doesn't land a starter. As for Vince Young, Jason Campbell, Chad Henne and others, they have to accept backup roles.

Wherever he ends up, Mario Williams is in line for a monster payday.

3. Mario mania: The top free agent on defense is Texans defensive end Mario Williams. The debate is whether 3-4 teams are willing to meet the price demands that work. Williams is the biggest name on defense to hit the market since Julius Peppers. The Atlanta Falcons and Seahawks will be the most likely 4-3 teams to get into the mix, but the price could go as high as $15 million a year. Williams offers a team a pass-rusher who is good enough to get 12 to 16 sacks a season. Because the top of the draft isn't loaded with top pass-rushers, the race to get Williams will be intense. Teams using 3-4 defenses will look at the five games he played in that scheme last season to determine if they can justify such an expense.

4. Receivers are everywhere: At the scouting combine, the list of tall, fast wide receivers was long and impressive The free-agent market could also be fruitful for teams in need of wide receivers. Jackson of the Chargers is the headliner. The Redskins, Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are expected to lead the efforts to sign him. Pierre Garcon didn't like the Colts' final offers and plans to hit the market. The Saints have Marques Colston and Robert Meachem available even though most people believe Colston will end up staying in New Orleans. Mario Manningham of the Giants could end up in Tampa Bay or somewhere else. The Jaguars need the most help at wide receiver, but they have to determine if they want to use free agency, the draft or both.

5. Restricted area: The restricted free-agent market is often boring and without activity. The reason is simple. Four-year rookie contracts and first-round deals that go five years limit the pool of restricted free agents. Restricted free agency starts after three accrued seasons and usually involves a lot of players drafted lower than the second round or not at all. With Arian Foster of the Houston Texans signing a five-year contract to stay, the most interesting restricted free agent is wide receiver Mike Wallace of the Pittsburgh Steelers. To protect themselves, the Steelers put a first-round tender on him. The question other teams will face is whether to gamble money and a first-round pick to acquire him. Because the Steelers would have seven days to restructure contracts and match a Wallace deal, opposing teams may shy away from going for him. Another interesting restricted free agent is Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb, who excels in man-to-man coverage. Overall, the list of restricted free agents likely won't get much action.

Sources: Titans eye Steve Hutchinson
Updated: March 13, 2012, 9:50 AM ET
By Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter | ESPN

One goal of signing Hutchinson would be to make Tennessee even more appealing to Manning, who is close to the guard from the time they've spent together at multiple Pro Bowls in Hawaii.

But Hutchinson was on the Titans' radar even before the Manning pursuit began, as they want to beef up the interior line with a veteran leader. Hutchinson is close to Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, as well, from their days together in Seattle.

The Titans also were preparing to make a major run at Houston Texans defensive end Mario Williams, but the organization has shifted its focus to Manning, a league source said.

Manning met with Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin, offensive coordinator Mike Sherman and other staff members for roughly five or six hours Monday night in Indianapolis, according to sources.

He was expected to meet with Titans coach Mike Munchak and a number of Titans offensive assistants Tuesday or Wednesday, sources said.

Munchak, a Hall of Fame guard, was a teammate of Manning's father, Archie, during the 1982 and 1983 seasons with the Houston Oilers.

"I want Manning," Titans owner Bud Adams told The Tennessean Sunday. "I'd love to see him in Titan blue after watching him so many years with the Colts. ... I want him. I am ready to do what it takes to get him aboard, and I think he'd be the guy to get us into the playoffs."

The Titans already have Hasselbeck, signed to a three-year contract last July, and Jake Locker, picked with the No. 8 overall selection in the 2011 draft. But Hasselbeck is due $5.5 million in salary this year after getting a chunk of his deal last season.

Manning, who already has met with the Denver Broncos and Arizona Cardinals, has continued to rehab his shoulder and neck.

He is expected to resume his throwing regimen -- most likely at Duke University, where he threw last week -- while he analyzes his free-agent choices, with no apparent deadline in place to make a decision, a source added.

Chris Mortensen is ESPN's senior NFL analyst. Adam Schefter is ESPN's NFL Insider.

Sione Pouha - DL - Jets

Jets NT Sione Pouha's three-year deal is for $15 million, and includes $9.5 million guaranteed.
It's an impressive haul for a late-blooming defensive tackle who recently celebrated his 33rd birthday. The Jets could ill-afford to let Pouha get away, however, after he anchored an otherwise underperforming run defense in 2011. Pouha graded out as the top defensive tackle in the league by Pro Football Focus last season.

Jordan Babineaux - DB - Titans

Titans agreed to terms with SS Jordan Babineaux on an undisclosed contract.
The Titans can't officially re-sign Babineaux until the start of free agency because he played under a "minimum salary benefit" contract in 2011, but was always expected to return to Tennessee. Babineaux exceeded expectations after signing a one-year deal in August, starting 14 games while making 93 tackles and one interception. Along with franchise player Michael Griffin, he'll form one half of the Titans' safety battery in 2012. Free agent Chris Hope is unlikely to be re-signed.

Todd Herremans - G - Eagles

Eagles signed RT Todd Herremans to a three-year, $21 million contract extension.
The deal includes $11 million guaranteed, and locks Herremans up through 2016, when he will be 34. Herremans was switched from left guard to right tackle late in training camp last season, but held his own as Michael Vick's blindside protector, allowing just four sacks. The Eagles will likely now turn their attention to locking up impending free agent LG Evan Mathis.

Terrell Thomas - DB - Giants

Giants agreed to terms with CB Terrell Thomas on an undisclosed contract.
It's likely a low-base, incentive-laden pact as Thomas works his way back from the second torn right ACL of his playing career. Thomas has yet to resume sprinting, but is tentatively expected to be ready for training camp. His re-signing means the end of fellow free agent Aaron Ross' time in New York. Thomas graded out as just the league's 60th best corner by Pro Football Focus in 2010 before missing all of 2011. He is an efficient tackler with playmaking ability when healthy, though. This was a big signing for the Giants, keeping a top-five free agent cornerback from hitting the market.

Good signing for the Saints. Ray, does this mean that they are not going to resign Meachem? Do they have enough cap room for Nicks?

Brandon Lloyd - WR - Rams Free agent Brandon Lloyd has reportedly assured Patriots players his contract demands in New England will be "reasonable."
The players have in turn relayed that message to management. The Patriots are expected to target Lloyd "quickly," and the Boston Herald believes he's the most likely free agent to sign with the team on Tuesday. The Patriots appear to be the clear favorites to land Lloyd

Had a feeling he would go there or at least its looking like it.
