so word is the likely candidate will be an internal hire. Current buzz is Callahan, Cavenaugh and Wes Phillips (if he doesn't get scooped by McVay - tho we can block that interview if we wanted since it isn't a HC position) as the most likely candidates.

Here's some info on Wes...interesting comment from ex Skin Logan likening him to Sean McVay...

Excerpt

"He reminds me the most of Sean," former Redskins tight end Logan Paulsen said Thursday night during an interview with ESPN 980 hosts Tim Murray and Nick Ashooh. "He’s a younger guy, he’s a big picture thinker about football, and I think he’s ready for the position despite his age.”

keim...

The Redskins expect to keep all of their offensive assistant coaches, a source said, one day after Sean McVay became head coach of the Los Angeles Rams. There had been rumors of tight ends coach Wes Phillips joining McVay's staff, but the source said Phillips and the other coaches were expected to stay. They would need permission to interview for another job. Phillips' dad, Wade, is the Rams' new defensive coordinator. The Redskins need to fill McVay's offensive coordinator job and could do that from within. That could be with head coach Jay Gruden again calling plays or elevating line coach Bill Callahan or quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh – both ex-coordinators.

I like the thought of Wes or Matt before Bill personally(think the Oline would suffer without him leading) but wonder whether Callahan would take it poorly if he wasn't advanced at this point.

will the bengals shut us down ?

I didn't think you could unless it was for a lateral position? In other words, if you go from a RB coach to interview for an OC, it would be ok. Maybe I am wrong.

If that is the case, why not just decline all offers to interview? Why did we let the Rams interview McVay at all? I guess its just commonplace in the NFL.

As long as we keep Callahan, I will be happy. He has turned around the OLine for sure. I want everyone to stay for sure. However, if Urban is the real deal, lets get him.

Guys just so you know the reason Bill Callahan is in Washington is because Jerry blocked him from interviewing for the Atlanta Job when he was in Dallas before the last year of his contract so he could keep continuity in the coaching staff.

I think he might take offense If so I guarantee he would be welcome back in Dallas and lots of other places

Just saying

That's what I thought but apparently it's only a HC gig you can't block...Bengals just did it to us and the Dolphins just did it to the Rams...

Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that the Dolphins have blocked the Rams’ request to interview offensive line coach Chris Foerster for the opening. Teams may block assistants from interviewing with other teams for positions other than head coach.

JLC saying Cavanaugh likely to be promoted to OC and Wes likely to go to the Rams....he's been wrong before but I can see this. Wes would be a good detail/follow thru guy for McVay since he's said he is going to call the offensive game plan in LA

Callahan is the right choice. Should be asst HC/OC. He, Cavanagh and Phillips can work closely together to call our offense.

see we are torn here . wes phillips could leave to be OC of the rams , the only way you stop that is make him OC . however you have callahan perhaps wanting a pay raise to OC and cavanaugh might offer experience and keep callahan at his o/line position with out making him feel he is dead ended

then cavanaugh or callahan could leave to the rams to get the pay raise

lots of issues here for sure
