I loved Kareem, but I was a Magic guy. Never thought anyone would surpass that, but Kobe actually did.

Big Game James with the Statue of Liberty Dunk. I remember coming home from school and my little brother says "Magic has AIDS." Sean getting shot and now this. I'm more angry than sad. Its weird.

I became a Laker fan when Kareen went there. Kobe was a great competitor. I don't try to say one is better than another, they were all great. Not much of a pro basketball fan anymore. There is little strategy other than clear out or pick and roll.

Sad for all the people that died and their families. Reminded me of the day Dale Earnhardt died. He was the last person in sports to me that was larger than life.

My two cents worth on the four posts above me:

Kareem's sky hook shot was just unbelievable, Magic was the closest thing I have ever seen to a legal Harlem Globetrotter, and Worthy could run the court from end to end for an hour unrested and not get winded.

A quick story: In 1983 my NC State Wolfpack had 10 regular season loses and at that time we had to win the ACC Tournament just to get invited to the NCAA Tournament. In the semi-final game UNC trotted out Michael Jordan, James Worthy, and Sam Perkins and somehow we beat them. In the final game Virginia trotted out Ralph Sampson and Jeff Lamp and somehow we beat them too. We became known as the 'Cardiac Pack' as we went on to win the NCAA National Championship, beating Virginia again along the way, at something like 300 to 1 odds, by beating Houston with 'Fi Slama Jama' in the championship game. I'm sure this entire tournament took a few years off my life with close heart attacks but somehow God allowed me to recover. Unfortunately, Coach Jim Valvano did not beat his later battle with cancer however.

David Thompson was the guy I loved to watch .... except against MD. One of the greatest college games ever was the OT game between the Terps and State in 74 ... 103-100. MD had a great team also but only the ACC champion went to the NCAA tournament back then.

Man you are bringing back so many memories with Coach Lefty stomping his feet when his Terps didn't get the call he wanted but he still didn't lead the league in technical fouls called against him. That OT game that you mentioned between Maryland and NC State to this day remains the greatest college basketball game I have ever seen! Maryland was loaded with McMillan, Elmore, Lucas, and who am I forgetting? As for David Thompson, by the numbers, he remains the greatest player to ever play in the ACC. Maybe that's only because Dean Smith demanded team basketball which allowed Michael Jordan to only average 19 ppg at Carolina. What memories!

Now if Moses had gone to Maryland all bets are off for my Wolfpack going undefeated during that time.

I guess that's kind of like saying that if Coach K would have signed Kobe Bryant out of high school, instead of Kobe going straight to the NBA, which was the plan, Coach K would have more nattys than he already has.

You won't believe how much respect I had for Maryland during those days! I'm just glad we had a guy named David Thompson.

Great memory dad . . . yes he was . . . and at 5'7" tall he was as tough as nails driving thru the lane and feeding the ball to Thompson for the slam dunk. David Thompson was only 6'4" tall but he had a vertical jump of 45" which was unheard of in those days.

Jim "Bozo" O'Brien's last year was 1973.

I became a MD fan in the 69-70 season. Lefty's first year. I remember them playing South Carolina coached by Frank McGuire and the Terps were seriously undermanned. Lefty played a slow down game and if I remember right O'Brien hit a corner jumper for the winning basket. Fun times!!

I was right and wrong. It was 70-71 season which was Lefty's second season. MD won at Cole 31-30.
