The Off-Season Workouts start next Monday and thus articles on the workouts should be reaching the next stage in the off-season. I thought, like last year, we could start a thread on the off-season program - on the mini-camps, training camp, etc. Articles, videos, whatever. Sticky, bump it, and whatnot. The other off-season threads seemed to center on the draft or signings. They have reached 900 posts or so already.

49ers Blog and Q&A: One step ahead: Kaepernick working to improve speed this offseason

Don't worry, Jim Harbaugh. Colin Kaepernick hasn't spent the entire offseason bulking up and becoming muscle-bound in the weight room.

He's been working on his speed, too.

The 49ers quarterback spent the last two weeks training with track athletes in Atlanta, including former all-American Monica Hargrove, a specialist in the 200 and 400 meters. Kaepernick, of course, ran for more than 1,000 yards in three straight seasons at Nevada and he rushed for 679 yards in just 10 starts last year for the 49ers, scoring eight touchdowns on the ground and averaging a gaudy 7.7 yards a carry.

Kaepernick's most prominent victim this past season, the Packers, turned to the college ranks this offseason for a tutorial on how to stop the read-option offense. Kaepernick ran for 181 yards - an NFL record for a quarterback - and two touchdowns in a 45-31 divisional playoff win over the Packers. The Falcons, who are scheduled to face Kaepernick and the 49ers this year, also went back to college to better learn the read-option.

But Kaepernick is trying to stay one step ahead. He believes he can get faster and more efficient with his stride, and he spent his time on the track doing just that. Stamina apparently isn't an issue for Kaepernick. At one point, he ran nine consecutive 150-meter sprints in 18 seconds or less, impressing Hargrove and the other track athletes in the process.

At his side, as he has been all offseason, was 49ers wide receiver Ricardo Lockette, who has an extensive track background himself. He has taken part in the U.S. Olympic Trials, was the NCAA Division II 200-meter champion in 2008 with a time of 20.6 seconds and tied for the third-fastest 40-yard dash (4.37 seconds) at the 2011 scouting combine.

Following the Super Bowl, Kaepernick and Lockette - housemates in Santa Clara - took a week off before heading to Atlanta. They trained at CES Performance outside the city, which is where Kaepernick worked before the 2011 draft. Lockette, a member of the 49ers' practice squad in 2012, is from Albany, Georgia. Another 49ers receiver, A.J. Jenkins, also trained at CES performance, although it is unknown whether he took part in the track workouts as well.

The offseason hasn't been all work for Kaepernick. He was a presenter Sunday at the 2013 American Country Music Awards in Las Vegas. Kaepernick handed out the award for Top Vocal Duo honor, which was won by Thompson Square.

Kaepernick is now back in Santa Clara for the start of the 49ers' offseason program, which begins Monday.

From Bingo:

Kyle Williams - WR - 49ers

49ers WRs Kyle Williams (torn ACL) and Mario Manningham (torn ACL and PCL) will not participate in OTAs.

Williams was facing an uphill battle to be ready for the offseason program, but he's reportedly on pace to return at the start of training camp. Manningham was never expected to participate in OTAs, and he's a candidate to start the season on the PUP list. Both will compete for roster spots.

Opening day of the 49ers' offseason workout program will be April 15, a day before the regular-season schedule is unveiled for the reigning NFC champions.

The 49ers' lone, mandatory minicamp will be June 11-13 to conclude the nine-week offseason program, the NFL announced Thursday. Organized team activities will take place May 21-23, May 28-30 and June 3-6.

None of the offseason workouts are expected to be open to the public at the 49ers' Santa Clara facility.

49ers.com | MT: 49ers Offseason Workouts Begin

It’s the first football activity the San Francisco 49ers can hold in 2013. Voluntary offseason conditioning work begins today at team headquarters in Santa Clara.

In Phase One of the offseason program, the 49ers will hold two weeks of conditioning work under the supervision of the team’s strength and conditioning staff.

When the two weeks have passed, Phase Two of the program will allow coaches on the field to work on drills with the players before the start of 10 days of offseason team activities (OTAs) and minicamps to be held in May and June.

The first OTA sessions will be held on May 21-23, May 28-30 and June 3-6.

A rookie minicamp will be held after the 2013 NFL Draft. Rookies, however, must finish their spring semester or fourth quarter of school before participating in the OTA sessions with veteran teammates. Last offseason, second-round pick LaMichael James had to finish school at Oregon before taking part in offseason workouts with the 49ers.

49ers offseason workout program begins today - Niners Nation

The NFL is slowly gearing back up, as teams are officially beginning the road to Super Bowl 48. Teams with returning coaching staffs can being their "voluntary" offseason workout programs today, starting with two weeks of conditioning work. Teams with new coaches were allowed to start earlier this month. I still think the 49ers should petition for the extra weeks Jim Harbaugh lost during the lockout. Clearly it was necessary!

The first two weeks will feature basic conditioning work, as the only coaches allowed on the field are strength and conditioning coaches who have no other coaching responsibilities with the team. After the first two weeks, things will pick up a bit as Phase Two will allow for all coaches on the field, as well as some more pertinent drills.

Things will get even further organized with ten days of OTAs and minicamps in May and June. The 49ers will conduct their OTAs May 21-23, May 28-30 and June 3-6. The team will also have a rookie minicamp after the draft. All rookies are allowed in the rookie minicamp, but the OTAs require rookies be finished with their spring semester or fourth quarter of school.

Here is a rundown of the three phases of the offseason workout programs. Much of this qualifies as "voluntary", but obviously "voluntary" can often be better stated as "volun-told".

ARTICLE 21
Section 2
(i) Phase One. Phase One shall consist of the first two weeks of the Club's offseason workout program. Subject to the additional rules set forth in Section 5 of this Article, Phase One activities shall be limited to strength and conditioning and physical rehabilitation only. During Phase One, only full time or part-time strength and conditioning coaches, who have no other coaching responsibilities with the Club, shall be allowed on the field; no other coaches shall be allowed on the field or to otherwise par*ticipate in or observe activities. No footballs shall be permitted to be used (only "dead ball" activities), except that quarterbacks may elect to throw to receivers provided they are not covered by any other player. Players cannot wear helmets during Phase One.

(ii) Phase Two. Phase Two shall consist of the next three weeks of the Club's offseason workout program. Subject to the additional rules set forth in Section 5 of this Article, during Phase Two all coaches shall be allowed on the field. On-field wor*kouts may include individual player instruction and drills, as well as "perfect play" drills (e.g., offense or defense only, but not offense vs. defense), or special teams drills on a "separates" basis (e.g.., kicking team or return team only, but not kicking team vs. return team). No live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills are permitted. No offense vs. defense drills are permitted (e.g.., no one-on-one offensive linemen vs. defensive linemen pass rush or pass protection drills, no wide receivers vs. defensive backs bump* and-run drills, and no one-on-one special teams drills involving both offense and defense are permitted.) Players cannot wear helmets during Phase Two.

(iii) Phase Three. Phase Three shall consist of the next four weeks of the Club's offseason workout program. Subject to the additional rules set forth in Subsec* tions 5(a) and 5(c) of this Article and Appendix G to this Agreement, during Phase Three each Club may conduct a total of ten days of organized team practice activity ("OTAs" or "OTA days"). The restrictions set forth in Subsection 5(b) of this Article shall not apply to OTA days. The Club may conduct a maximum of three days of OTAs during each of the first two weeks of Phase Three. A maximum of four days of OTAs may be conducted during either the third week or the fourth week of Phase Three, with the Mandatory Veteran Minicamp (Article 22, Section 2) to be held during the other week. During weeks in which the Club conducts only three days of OTAs, the Club may also conduct a fourth day of non-OTA workouts, but such activities shall be subject to the rules governing Phase Two workouts, as set forth in Subsection 2(b)(ii) of this Ar* ticle. During Phase Three, all coaches shall be allowed on the field. No live contact is permitted. No one-on-one offense vs. defense drills are permitted (i.e., no offensive linemen vs. defensive linemen pass rush or pass protection drills, no wide receivers vs. defensive backs bump-and-run drills, and no one-on-one special teams drills involving both offense and defense are permitted). Special teams drills (e.g., kicking team vs. return team) are permitted, provided no live contact occurs. Team offense vs. team defense drills, including all drills listed in Appendix G to this Agreement, are permitted, provided no live contact occurs. Clubs may require players to wear helmets; no shells are permit* ted during Phase Three of the Club's offseason workout program or any minicamp.
