When I got drafted in 1968, gasoline was $0.16 a gallon. That Pontiac had a 20 gallon tank. $2.00 would just about fill it. Then again, I was making $55 a week and taking home $47.

This was my baby when I was inducted on 9/23/68

1970 Chevy Impala SS. Mine had red trim , not blue.

You owned a '70 when you were drafted in the fall of '68?

Obviously you meant 1960 Impala. That's a sharp sled for sure.

I did correct that blunder. Believe it or not, I bought that beauty for $100 after my 1960 Rambler station wagon died. The guy who owned it lost his license for Excessive speeding (110 in a 40 mph) and DUI at the same time. His father made him sell it, or move out. His father took the $100 as back rent owed.

This thread has rekindled all kinds of dead memories.

I’ve had a loose goal of buying myself a cruiser this year to celebrate my 50th. The dream cars are out of reach price-wise (‘68 Charger, ‘66 GTO, or ‘58 Bonneville). Even re-living my first car (‘66 Impala) is probably unrealistic those have shot way up in value in recent years. I’m focusing on either a ‘55 or ‘56 Mercury Montclair or Monterey, a ‘64 T-bird, or a ‘58 Chevy Delray (same styling as the Impala but usu about 1/5 the cost). I have a soft spot for British roadsters too but I’m looking for a family ice cream-getter rn.

The jet trim on the ‘60 Chevys is one of my all time favorite pieces of automotive styling

Favorite childhood memory prob first trip to Fenway park. Sox lost to Brewers but Yaz and Dewey hit homers and some rookie third baseman (Wade something?) had three ribbies.

Favorite childhood memory....

Not many. I grew up poor. Poorest of the poor. Did go roller skating a lot and for my 9th birthday I got a pair of roller skates. I loved them. Probably the best present I ever got.

Looked identical to these.

It's a great life to grow up poor but then not be a "grownup poor".

Exactly! By no means am I “movie star” wealthy. But I’ve lived a good last 20+ years.

I looked up on Google Maps the house where I lived a majority of my childhood. Not much has changed

You mean you don't own a yacht and you manage to be happy?

It's funny how difficult and "unhappy" people make their lives by pursuing things they don't need and often don't really want. In essence, they drive themselves crazy trying to get others to look up to them.

What is your favorite piece of history?

This is a tough one for me but I think the end of WWII and the death of Hitler.

Here's an obscure event that always fascinated me. What would the world be like it it succeeded?

In short - Guy Fawkes led a group that buried gun powder under the English Parliament before an appearance of the king. It could have wiped out the entire English leadership if it weren't for a whistle blower. The English still celebrate the day with fireworks displays equivalent to the US Independence Day displays.
