This was a bad winter for maple trees. We didn't have the usual snow and brutal cold. The collectors and syrup makers maximized the syrup and didn't waste the syrup on as much maple candy. 2020 syrup will be up at least $2 a quart. I have a couple of friends who make a living and the trees just didn't want to give up the sap.

For those that don't know, maple sap is collected in late January and February when the extreme cold at night and change to warmer air in the day make maple trees circulate sap. If you don't have those twenty five or thirty degree changes in temps, the sap pretty much stays in place in the trees. Having days and nights that are very similar in temps are called, "No Run" days. It takes about a gallon of sap boiled down to make a cup of syrup.
