There's a big difference between shaking hands after the game & helping a guy up DURING a game. In football a RB, QB, WR, DB, LB or Lineman have 10 teammates who can help them up if they need it.

Dick Butkus or Conrad Dobler help an opposing player up after a play? I think not.

Fair play & Good sportsmanship is fine. I don't have a problem with that at all. What I have a problem with is if your team stinks a kid shouldn't be rewarded for it. At the Olympics they only give out three medals. 4th place doesn't get squat.

Some would say helping a player up after a play is good sportmanship. I certainly do not have any problem with a player not doing it during a game - I completely understand that - but when I see one do it it doesn't "tick me off", nor do I think its something new.

Players are competing against one another during a game. They shouldn't be helping each other up. It's one thing if a guys gets injured. I understand both teams stopping & seeing how the guy is. Players are far too friendly today. It's a big reason why some of the rivalries just aren't the same.

But does that really diminish the quality of play? I think across most sports, the quality of play has been improving over the years. The product is getting better. I never liked the concept that you have to "hate" your opponent on the field. You can compete hard and help people up at the same time. If the whistle has blown and the play is over, there's no benefit to your team to leave that guy down.

We complain all the time about a reduction of respect in sports, and yet we want players to stop performing sportsmanlike acts on the field like helping each other up after the play? To me that's a sign of respect. We can't have it both ways.

I think the quality of play in football has diminished in a big way. Granted part of it has to do with the league not allowing the defense to do ANYTHING. Many rivalries aren't the same anymore. Teams don't hate each other like they once did. The only rivalry in the NFL that seems real these days is the Steelers vs Ravens. All the others are meh.

The quality of play in basketball is a joke & it's only going to get worse because the talent coming into the league continues to get watered down every year.

Players have been coming into the NBA too early for years. They aren't ready & for the most part will never reach their full potential.

Baseball is relying on kids from Latin America more & more these days. Baseball is watering down a bit as well.

Fortunately Canada lives & breaths hockey so the NHL is in good shape.

I don't see what the big deal is if a player doesn't help a guy up after a play. They can shake hands & have a beer after the game.

I agree. I just don't see why its a big deal if a player does. Some players can be as mean, aggressive, and nasty during play and turn it off between plays.

Honestly I don't think I could in a contact sport but I lose no respect for those that can.

Many of you may disagree with me and that's fine but I think Grapes obviously would have been better off making his point valid or not without naming names.

Maybe we do live in a PC world but I wouldn't want anyone going on TV and calling me a "puke" and/or exposing my personal problems to the world. Mr Cherry has a right to his opinion but that doesn't include slandering a person.

Just my 2 cents.

I don't think anyone here is saying they have a problem with a guy NOT being helped up. I think what most are saying is that IF a guy does help a guy up, they view it as civil and sporting, and doesn't mean the play itself can't be intense.

As to other sports, I just don't agree. I think with better conditioning, earlier development, and more participants worldwide, its only logical that most athletes today are far beyond the abilities of decades ago in just about every sport. Rule changes themselves can have an impact - like the NFL being more pass friendly (and I agree with you on the things holding back defensive players, it's a little much). But in terms of pure athleticism, your best athletes in American professional sports are probably in football and basketball, just based purely on numbers alone. And the fact that most sports are more international these days - hockey, golf, baseball, and basketball in particular, means the level of competition is only more impressive.

The NBA has become a joke. This past draft was ridiculous. Not one player selected is going to be a superstar. The 1 & done rule is hurting the NBA big time because players aren't developing their game. The NBA needs to go back to the three year rule. Where kids have to stay in school for 3 years before they can play in the NBA. I know it's not going to happen, but the league will continue to suffer because of it. Jordan was at UNC for three years. It worked out fine for him & the NBA. So many of these guys get horrible advice & end up throwing away their chance at the NBA because they aren't ready. These kids might be better atheletes in some cases, but they certainly aren't better basketball players.

I'd prefer they sued the CBC to get him off the air. I don't mind the outrageous comments he sometimes makes, but he's just fucking boring now. Tired of his schtick.

In my opinion, the NBA could do with fewer superstars and more solid fundamental, blue-collar players. Good defensive position and the mid-range jumpshot have been phased out of the sport, and I think that has more than anything else to do with the depreciation of the game.

It won't happen. Kids don't stay in school long enough to learn the fundamentals. What people forget about Jordan is he was very fundamentally sound. He spent three years under Dean Smith. As did Worthy, Perkins & many others. They learned the fundamentals of the game. Coaches today don't have any control over these kids. People from the outside do. They tell them just 1 year & you're going to be a NBA star.

Another reason Americans choose basketball and football is the lack of a proper minor league system...they want the easy money
