What does defaming someone by calling them an alcoholic have to do with PCism? The suit is not that they were not alternatively called "blood-alcohol level impaired." What do kids' participation trophies have to do with NHL fighting?

My point is we live in a politically correct world now. We wouldn't be making a big deal about this 5 or 10 years ago. Now people will sue each other over almost anything.

In kids sports today everything is about fair play & good sportsmanship. They've taken the competitivness out of it almost entirely. It's all about political correctness.

One of the reasons I like Hockey over every other professional sport is because they do it right. During the playoffs they beat the crap out of each other. When the series is over they get in line shake hands & congratulate one another on a great series.

When I see players from opposite teams helping each other up after a play in Football it ticks me off. The same goes for baseball players from opposite teams talking & laughing before a game. In the past these things never would have happened.

yet it was the law firm Grimson works with that issued the statement dash linked

he joined twitter with lawyer guns ablazing ... his second tweet

don cherry: show me an article where i say (1) fighting should be banned or (2) the role of enforcer causes a life of addiction

I was sure I read that Grimson was against legal action last week but I cannot find the article so maybe I was wrong. Sue me!

I enjoy that, too. But to me there is a big difference between a solid legal hit that knocks a guy to the ice and a cheap, dangerous hit that targets a knee, or a head, or smashes a guy into the boards face first. Trying to get rid of the latter is trying to preserve the hard-hitting nature of the game while trying to minimize the dangerous and unnecessary hits that end careers prematurely and cause players to suffer with lifelong, debilitating physical and mental conditions. Where fighting falls in that spectrum is an open debate. But I don't think that stems from any kind of PCism, but rather advances in science that have informed us on just how dangerous some of this trauma can be.

I don't see how a guy picking another guy up or having a conversation inbetween plays is much different than guys beating each other up during a game and then shaking hands. And those are certainly not new things - just civility between colleagues when the game isn't "on."

That has nothing to do with political correctness. That has everything to do with a mentality of positive reinforcement.

I think it's awesome when players chat and laugh on the field of play. It makes it a heck of a lot more similar to the pickup games we play. And I would also like to mention that the coolest thing about rugby was the friendly banter between sides right before we knocked the crap out of each other. It kept everyone's cool and kept everyone in check, made the game more enjoyable without diminishing competitiveness.

But yeah, the main point is that "fair play" and "good sportsmanship" are not issues of political correctness. And in fact, in my opinion, they are really good things to teach kids. Those are transferable skills/mentalities. If they play their sports fair and square and respecting their opponents, then fewer people will seek to stab each other in the back in the real world [hopefully].

Ronnie Lott played by the credo 'hit them has hard as you possibly can then help them up and get ready for the next play' over 30 years ago.

Man I'm getting old.

I'm suing you for emotional distress caused by our seesaw fantasy battle this week and last!

I'm going to countersue as long and as strongly as I can, then I'll get up and shake your hand when I am done.

I agree with your point and this brought a hilarious dialogue into my head after reading this last line (note - it's more entertaining in a British accent).

Person1: Excuse me, I'm a mugger, and would really rather not stab you with the knife in my vest pocket. But will should the occassion call for it lest it prevent the future procurement of monies from my victims.

Person2: Oh, that is ever so kind. I do detest knives. One... second... and there you are. Some cash for you and I bid you a fine evening. :yo:

Person1: Thank you, madam. :yo:

Can you see them?

Now imagine the person being mugged is white!

I have no idea where I'm going with this, so I'm... just... going... to back away...

I don't have any problem with the way Shanahan is doing his job. I agree that headshots should be taken out of the game . When the guys mentioned by Cherry played things were far different than they are now. They were given smelling salts & maybe threw up afterwards & were expected to be ready for their next shift as their teammates on the bench laugh.

I don't care if they give each other a hard time after a play. What I said was I don't like seeing baseball players from opposite teams talking & laughing BEFORE the game.

There's a big difference between shaking hands after the game & helping a guy up DURING a game. In football a RB, QB, WR, DB, LB or Lineman have 10 teammates who can help them up if they need it.

Dick Butkus or Conrad Dobler help an opposing player up after a play? I think not.

Fair play & Good sportsmanship is fine. I don't have a problem with that at all. What I have a problem with is if your team stinks a kid shouldn't be rewarded for it. At the Olympics they only give out three medals. 4th place doesn't get squat.
