All of his suits are a tacky sideshow. His wardrobe is on par with a pair of clown shoes, a tacky one punchline joke. :)

That said, I don't see anything wrong with his comments. It is kind of sad that people would take tragic deaths and use them to further their views on a subject. If they were so against fighting in hockey then they could have pursued a different career.

i think it might be here ( CBC.ca | As it Happens | Jim Thomson responds to Don Cherry ) but Im not sure and i cant listen to it right now

Jim Thomson said it best in response to Don Cherry ... paraphrasing and Im probably adding too much incendiary language

Don Cherry profits from dirty play ... He made money from a video series that showed the hits that ended players career (Primeau, Kariya etc) ... of course he takes this stand against cleaning up the game and ending cheapshots since he has such a heavy vested financial interest in this kind of play

Many of you may disagree with me and that's fine but I think Grapes obviously would have been better off making his point valid or not without naming names.

Maybe we do live in a PC world but I wouldn't want anyone going on TV and calling me a "puke" and/or exposing my personal problems to the world. Mr Cherry has a right to his opinion but that doesn't include slandering a person.

Just my 2 cents.

I don't think these guys want to proceed with a lawsuit, I think they just want Grapes to take 30-60 seconds on Coach's Corner to apologize for his comments. He's a stubborn old bear, but I think Don crossed the line and should do a mea culpa on national tv.

I agree Dash he could probably make this problem "go away" so to speak with an apology but like you said we are taking about grapes here and with his ego he will turn to wine before that happens.

He is as you said a "stubborn old bear".

I agree with you

he goes on a TAXPAYER FUNDED network and spouts misinformed garbage

Cherry had that 1 quote where he said since so and so year (1989?) there have been this many suicides and none of the players were fighters ... lol ... then someone points out well no ... actually 3 of them were fighters ... good research there donnie boy :thumb:

I like this bit of logic: "You guys were fighters, and now you don't want guys to make the same living you did." yah thats it Don ... nothing about wanting to get some answers as to some of the root causes of why the players died in the offseason ... if it were up to Don ... we'd just sweep everything under the rug so he could keep pumpin out those rock em sock vids on VHS

Okay, so obviously Grapes should get some form of repercussion for calling specific individuals alcoholics and drug addicts (or something like that) on national television, be it a lawsuit or at least being made to "take it back" and apologize, but I would like to go in a different direction with this discussion momentarily.

I apologize, of course, for the digression.

If folks who used to make their money by fighting are coming out and saying that perhaps fighting isn't the way to go, and perhaps it's a bad idea for players to enter those roles because of consequences to their physical and mental health, and perhaps the NHL should start doing something about it, then doesn't that give more credence to that side of the argument? If the guys who lived it are saying it's probably a bad idea, I'm going to take that as a pretty convincing argument against it.

Okay, my digression is over. I don't like Grapes very much, and this further asserts my not liking him stance. I kind of hope he does get sued, and he loses, and then he loses his job. Then maybe he'll at least start thinking about the things he says before he says them.

Of course, he probably won't.

I understand and sometimes agree with your sentiment, but if PCism is overly zealous at times, so is people complaining about things being "too PC" that don't have anything to do with politcal correctness. This potential legal action is not centered around the recent rise of PCism, but based on the centuries old principle of defamation. Grapes can call them hypocrites, idiots, etc. all he wants. That's his opinion. But you can't call someone a drug addict or an alcoholic - that can be damaging to reputation and is the whole reason for defamation laws existing in the first place.

I agree with Dash this is probably just a chance to draw some press coverage and make him look bad and/or force an apology.

Don Cherry - you've been outsmarted by "goons!"

This one's slander, right? Libel is the written one? Or would this count as libel because it's recorded media? I don't remember how that works. I just knew I wasn't allowed to write whatever bad stuff I wanted to about people from my journalism classes.

That's just it, it depends. I don't know the specifics on defamation laws in Canada. In general, slander is spoken and libel is written, but in some places spoken word can fall under libel if its done via some kind of recorded media (like a podcast or TV show). If memory serves, since the hockey players are public figures, at least in the US, you'd have to find "malice" on Cherry's part. It's a pretty high standard, but like I said, I doubt a suit is ever filed, much less reaches a courtroom.

Damn it! Now I have to look up Canadian law just out of curiosity. ;)

The truth of the matter is these guys would never have been in the league there wasn't fighting or a place for goons in the game. I find it interesting that in the PC world that we have now this stuff is coming out. I don't like the fact if a kids team finished dead last they still get a trophy or a ribbon. We can't even cheer against the other team when watching our kids play. It's a JOKE.

Cherry has made a lot of money promoting that part of the game. His mistake was naming names. I have no idea if the three players have a case or will even pursue it. I do know one thing though, this discussion isn't going away.

In the articles I read last week Grimson said he was not interested in a lawsuit, I do not know if Cherry said anything else stupid over the weekend to change his mind though.

What does defaming someone by calling them an alcoholic have to do with PCism? The suit is not that they were not alternatively called "blood-alcohol level impaired." What do kids' participation trophies have to do with NHL fighting?

he joined twitter with lawyer guns ablazing ... his second tweet

don cherry: show me an article where i say (1) fighting should be banned or (2) the role of enforcer causes a life of addiction
