If your team big board is the same as Walter, CBS, etc...you could miss filling a hole here or there.

I took several big boards merged them and sorta created my own and married that with needs...although we did note the true BPA, even if that player wasn't on our board. The way the picks ahead were going, we are pretty close to BPA on our board on the 4 picks....our 2nd rd pick the safeties were so close it wouldn't have mattered up to the 4th guy on our board.
I agree. I don't think any publication knows the needs of a team more than its own fanbase. In a real NFL draft, if a team lands one future pro bowler, one 5-6 year starter, one core special teams guy and a career backup, they had one Hell of a draft. You can say "my team needed secondary and I took a corner and two safeties", but if none fit your scheme and are gonna get cut, you didn't fill any needs

I always think it's hilarious when I listen to national media talk about the skins and I'm just thinking wow I know so much more about them then they do lol.

Exactly...fans typically also know that back up guy that is ready for more snaps or be a starter, but has been held back by a player that was allowed to leave via FA or released, etc....an outsider may see it as a big hole and draft too early for that position.

For the draft pubs...I just go off their big boards not their picks...I figure if a player is top 20 on 3 different big boards...you can trust that he's top 20 and feel okay taking him with the 18th overall pick...but if he's 15th overall on Walterfootball, and 30th overall on CBS and another board has him 35th overall...uhmmm, if I'm drafting 18th overall...I might not draft that player if I'm looking for value.

The Biggest problem though is that fans might be able to identify the biggest needs, but in general fans are not the greatest at evaluating talent... No matter how much studying we do, or videos we watch, it is very difficult with the information we are given to evaluate talent... Proof, every site you go to and every "expert" will have a totally different big board...

And depending on your big board, you don't want to reach on a player just because he fits one of your needs better... You can get the better player and maybe adapt a little... Football really is the most difficult draft to predict... One trade can fuck up the entire draft...

I forgot the guy that mocked Keanu Neal to PIT at 25.

I'm thinking...really? He's not going to beat out Robert Golden next year who was retained as a Steeler FA...not a stud, but starter material and 3 yrs in the systems...still hungry, no rookie is beating him out next yr...they can get the same talent or better a round later.

Then again, I'm watching all the PIT games, he's trying to make picks for 32 team...I probably SHOULD know more...lol.

I would agree with that, but the biggest thing most fans don't know are what exactly do scouts look for...anybody can time a player in the 40, or 20 yd shuttle, etc. Sure we can evaulate on that level, but is a guys pad level too high? What is that position's responsibility on a given play?...sometimes players will shun their responsibility and make a play. To the fan it might look like it was supposed to happen that way and we applaud it...the player goes back to the sideline or in film study next week, knowing his position coach is going to ream him a new one.

The only problem I have with this is a lot of the national media people just make stuff up or follow along with the crowd when they talk about prospects. You have to be real careful who you listen too. But I do agree most fans don't know what to look for.

I think in some minor regards, the fans are better at observing some things that are just so obvious that people who pick apart prospects tend to underrate but the other 90% of the time....yeah, we are just throwing darts based on small sample sizes on people we've never met.

Also, lots of times people base their opinions on history... For example, the way the Jets handled Mark Sanchez, and Geno smith, and have not drafted a good QB since Chad Pennington(who wasn't much better than league average)... Makes me very tentative about taking a risk at QB... Its one thing to trade up to get the big 2, but with a late first rounder, or any early pick before the 5th round?? Just too chicken... Do the Jets need a QB?? absolutely, but I would rather not take the risk...

And you 100% can't use history to discredit an upcoming player. ex: Calvin Johnson was the 3rd WR the Lions picked near the top of the draft after 2 busts but you can't pass on Calvin Johnson.

Y'all are killing me. Every time I get close to pick, someone decides to shut their internet down for 24 hours.

Y'all have some serious lives...I'm hardly ever away from tHoop fer that long....like maybe a family vacation er some shit, but even then, I'd prolly glance at that shit on muh phone once the dependents were asleep.

Yeah, this is ridiculous. When doing these drafts, I feel horrible if I make people wait for an hour, let alone 8. It's about making a commitment and respecting those who depend on you to keep your commitment.
