We're up to 20 NRI's for Spring Training. Fortunately, the Pirates' page at MLB.com seems to have an up-to-date list:

Non Roster Invitees | pirates.com: Team

We all recognize that most of these guys will wind up as minor league depth or will be gone before the end of Spring Training. On the other hand, there are some interesting names on the list, especially among the pitchers:

- Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon: Pirate fans recognize that the team has made a recent practice of inviting top prospects to participate in ST, even though they have little or no chance to make the team. My guess is that we'll see Cole around mid-season in 2013, with Taillon following in mid-season 2014.

- Jonathan Sanchez: Signed as starting depth during the Liriano saga, Sanchez also seems to be a candidate as a lefty out of the bullpen. I wonder if he has some kind of "out" clause in his contract.

- Vin Mazzaro: This guy DOES have major league experience (much of it as a mediocre starting pitcher) over each of the past 4 seasons. I have little confidence that Mazzaro will contribute, and was happy that the team has enough depth to DFA him. On the other hand, he's only 26 and has been assigned a low uniform number (32) for Spring Training..... which seems to indicate that management thinks he has a decent chance of making the team.

- Kris Johnson: Perhaps the most intriguing NRI pitcher is this 28-year-old beanpole (listed at 6' 4" - 170 lb.) lefty starter. He seemed to find himself after joining the Pirates' organization in 2012. He had been a mediocre performer in the past, but finished a successful 2012 season pitching like an ace in the Dominican. Johnson is a real long-shot, given the Pirates' starting pitching depth, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him tried as a bullpen lefty. Johnson's minor league career:

...and Johnson's finish in the Dominican:

Bucs' Starling Marte, Kris Johnson shine in Dominican finals | pirates.com: News

- Of the remaining pitchers, I'm guessing that Kyle Waldrop and Mike Zagurski have a non-zero chance of making the bullpen..... Waldrop due to his decent performance in 17 appearances out of the Twins' bullpen in 2012, and Zagurski because he's a lefty, made 45 relief appearances for the D-Backs last year, and has been assigned a low uniform number (47).

- Anything can happen, but I see little potential help among the position players. In fact, the list scares me a bit. If we wind up with Ivan DeJesus or Anderson Hernandez on the bench as back-up middle infielders..... that contributes to a weak bench. But the guy who scares me most is Brad Hawpe. As a Hurdle favorite, and having been assigned uniform number 2, I gotta feeling that Hawpe is almost a sure thing to come north with the team. I guess Hawpe could turn out OK, but I fear that he will prove to be far over-the-hill (off the cliff, in fact). Hey..... is it possible that Felix Pie is still only 28? Finally, I believe Matt Hague's window of opportunity has closed.

I don't want to have Hawpe play in the majors this year for the Bucs, but his past few seasons (in the majors) have been acceptable for a guy on a NRI.

I say Jonathan Sanchez.

If Hawpe makes the roster the offense is in bad shape.

I'm guessing one of the relievers. Can't see anyone else unless there is a trade. Too many other, better players for guys like Pie and Hawpe to jump over.

johnson and sanchez are my bets. one or the other and it will depend on what mcdonald and liriano look like as the one will stick in the rotation or pen as leftys are valuable.

Scouting the stat line, Jared Goedert looks interesting.

Looking at his numbers he is one of those folks that you wonder why he never got a major league AB. I bet as soon as you see him play we will know why. I guess the issue his numbers don't look good in the field at all.

I'm sure you're right, here's to hoping he's more.

Actually he was worth 1.7 WAR last season which was statistically his worst season, that is not like Hawpe. It is actually better than all but 4 Pirates from last season.

Didn't realize he played that well last season on any in the last few because the season before he was a -.4 and he had a few worse over the last few but not nit picking. Yeah probably better than most bench players they got but I still am not too thrilled to have him on the Pirates.

I'll take it for NRI. I think he makes the team. He will be worth positive value as a lefty only portion of a platoon and a late inning defensive replacement.

Inge is an interesting guy. I haven't seen him play much, but he's a competent 3B and USED TO BE a pretty good catcher (and also has played 2B and OF)..... with a bit of pop in his bat. It's unfortunate that he's had injury problems recently, but that's not unusual for a guy who will turn 36 in May. Seems like Inge should be a long-shot, but if he DOES make it, he could serve as the emergency 3rd catcher, making Martin or McKenry (or himself) available to pinch hit.

At any rate, I see Inge and Hawpe as the most likely position player NRI's to feed Hurdle's desire for veterans on the bench.

Meanwhile, Sanchez (if healthy) seems the most likely lefty to make the bullpen, along with Zagurski and long-shot Johnson. I'm rooting heavily for Johnson..... always like to see that kind of Cinderella story.

I think "competent" is selling Inge short at 3rd base, at least he is above average, and most years is closer to elite.

You'll get no argument from me. Perhaps I should have used one of the synonyms of "competent", such as "capable" or "good" on defense. I did not intend to sell Inge short defensively, but since I pay little attention to the American League, I could not be too effusive about his defensive skills.

Nonetheless, his offense hasn't been aging well (according to the stats I've looked at). From my perspective, the Pirates don't need another sub-.300 OBP bat..... and barring an injury to Alvarez, Inge would get little chance at 3B anyway. I see his signing primarily as an insurance policy against an injury to Alvarez. In other words, if Inge makes the team, that will NOT be good news for the Pirates' chances.

Completely agree about the sub .300 OBP, although I see him as a solid bench option even if Alvarez is completely healthy.

Although that view is in a vacuum, and doesn't take into the account the Pirates have a large amount of guys who are the corner IF/OF mold and don't have options left.
