Shae Simmons has elected free agency after being outrighted off the 40-man roster by the Cubs.
Simmons had the option to go to Triple-A Iowa or to hit the market, and the right-hander has chosen the later. When healthy, Simmons has shown swing-and-miss stuff, but he's struggled with injuries throughout his career, and pitched poorly with a 5.56 ERA for Triple-A Iowa. Someone will likely pick up the hard-throwing right-hander, but don't exact a huge market for someone who had a 21/21 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 22 2/3 innings.
Royals designated OF Abraham Almonte for assignment.
Almonte was batting just .179/.260/.284 in 151 plate appearances this season with Kansas City. The 29-year-old outfielder was claimed off waivers from the Indians at the end of spring training and served as the Royals' primary center fielder for a stretch. He's now back on the waiver wire.
