Jeff Fillion has released a bombshell this morning on Radio X waves by stating that Quebecor refused to buy the Arizona Coyotes since the price was too high.

It's Maxime Truman blog Danslescoulisses who shared information Fillion on social networks, the latter claiming that the leaders of Quebecor had the opportunity to buy the Coyotes before the expansion process of the NHL.

We could have hockey in Quebec now, but Pierre Dion would have preferred to refuse the offer of Gary Bettman due to the high price asked by the Commissioner of the League.

Nope, can't think of anybody else - If the report is true that Bettman nixed the deal for the Coyotes because he wanted a king's ransom, that could be interesting in a couple of years when the escape clause kicks in.

Worth noting that if Bettman asked QC to buy the Coyotes, he likely asked and was rebuffed by buyers from Seattle too and I doubt Bettman can afford to be vindictive to two of the most attractive markets without NHL clubs without pissing off owners sick of supporting failing franchises via revenue sharing.

That's pretty much it right there. I don't understand how they can justify asking $500M for a new franchise when the majority of existing teams, including some excellent and/or comparable markets, aren't worth that according to Forbes.

It is profoundly stupid of anyone to agree to an expansion fee that is higher than the actual value of all but 11 teams. And when the top 11 are all original 6 and 60s and 70s expansion teams. The two most recent expansion teams are worth half the fee. Anyone who's been past Economics 101 would know better.

It's quite.... a gamble.

I assume it would be Key until a new barn fell from the sky.

I think Bettman would've been fine with that for a few years in order to break into maybe the only untapped major market on the continent that can support hockey.

There's a few things the league could see as positives for owners that have happened since 2011 - local TV contracts are worth much more (Quebecor owns TVA so they would be benefitting from that via ad revenue the way TSN and SN do with the Leafs), the current national broadcasting deals means more automatic revenue right off the bat, ditto for the new Adidas sponsorship, balanced conferences has reduced the amount teams spend on travel costs...

Of course, the Canadian dollar has also plummeted since then, the 2012 lockout reduced the percentage of HRR that goes to the owners, the league is being sued by almost everybody who has ever laced it up and their grandchildren due to concussions that almost assuredly won't go the league's way and will result in a massive settlement, non-playing staff size continues to grow as things like analytics and speciality coaching become ever-more important.

I think you were right on the money, $400 mil seems like a pretty fair total fee.
