Would the Sharks be in a better position for a playoff spot if Nabby were our goalie? Would the Sharks be a better team with Nabby?

I want Nabby back, never thought too much for the Niemi signing.

I dunno. Nabby would be better in goal, I don't think anyone would dispute that, but his contract would have put the Sharks even closer to the cap than they already are. In hindsight, I think letting Nabby go was the right move. It's just the guy they brought in to replace him was a big mistake.

Nabby is old and expensive.

Give Greiss and the youngsters a chance next year.

It is unpossible for them to suck more than this Niemi garbage.

Would never happen but Niemi should be buried in the minors if he can't be traded in the off-season.

Nabby's contract and cap hit are lower than Nemo's this season...

True, but that wouldn't be the case if the Sharks had re-signed Nabby after his last contract expired. He only signed for a reduced price after sucking in Russia for half a season.

If you're making the case that the Sharks maybe should have traded for Nabby this season, then I won't argue that. I feel that Nabby would be better than Niemi (still would have had to find a taker for Niemi though). My point was just that at the time after the 2010 season, letting Nabby go was the right call.

I think the Sharks should have offered him a cheaper contract and if he didn't accept then let him walk. Niemi at 3.8 isn't exactly a bargain.

signing nemo was fine and at the time looked like a key move. In fact, with a good team in front of him, he can obviously get the job done. But until the sharks get a legit 3rd line with all three guys being good threats, the sharks will never advance as a franchise.

Their third lines over the last 5 years:
Mitchell-winnik-moore (all suck)

Mitchell-wellwood-pavelski was it? One legit scorer. Wellwood was effective but insufficient, and mitchell is the achilles heel of the line.

Malhotra-mcginn/cooch-mitchell (manny is great, but ginner wasn't effective yet and cooch was too young, and mitchell is still the POS on the line.

Cheechoo-Grier-roenick: cheech was already in severe decline, JR was approaching 40, grier was aging too. Good players and big names, but none anywhere near their peaks and thus not so effective anymore.

Bernier-Grier-Mitchell: bernier had potential but obviously sucks. Grier was good, and mitchell once again.

Bell (total bust there)-brown-rissmiller?: nothing special here.

The sharks have not had a serious, complete, effective third line since the thornton-ricci-sundstrom days. They might one or possibly two respectable guys, but never a complete line like torres-hansen-higgins or Bolland-versteeg-brouwer or even detroit's third line from their run of Franzen-Fillpula-Samuelsson. Imagine that as a THIRD line. Boston had Kelly-Peverley-Lucic as a third line with Seguin as a 10th forward to win the cup.

Until doug wilson realizes that you need a 3rd line that can score to win a cup, the sharks will continue to put all their chips in the thornton-marleau basket and then be bitterly disappointed.

Sharks fans and their love for Nabby remind me very much of Giants fans and their love for Bonds. Even though he has been gone for a couple years, people still say "bring him back" and think "he still makes us better". Nabby is done in San Jose and if this thread is all about hindsight, "what if we still had Nabby?", then I'm not sure why I'm wasting my time posting on it. If the club wants to go in a direction away from Niemi, it better be Griess, Stalock, Sexsmith, or Sateri. Nabby is a big part of the San Jose Sharks history, and that's where he belongs, in the history books.

^this!

get rid of Niemi, bring up one from AHL and give Griess the starter role, use Niemi for bait plus Nittymaki...have some faith in our homegrown goalies! at least expectations would be lower...
