Looks like that could have been the goal all along (or maybe at least Plan B). Submit an offset sheet for Super Nintendo Hjalmarsson, if the Hawks don't match, you have a top-4 Dman, if they do match, they'll likely walk away from Niemi in arbitration and then you can pounce.

I think that Hammer was his prime target and this was not in the picture at the time. I think that if it were his true objective he would have signed Niemi right after Chicago walks.
