this seems like a good place for this gif.

1. look at Lewis get knocked 5yds back by the DE
2. look at Cotton almost make a boneheaded play and go downfield too early because he doesn't have anyone to block.
Pelini/Sterup/Moudy don't do a half bad job blocking on this play.

where was this sort of play against MSU? seriously, I would have tried anything to get our offense jump started in that 1st half and you can see the way NW defense is flowing to Ameer, MSU was doing the same thing.

See, it doesn't take a special character to be a leader. It takes a person with half a brain, and some balls. You gotta have balls, or you're nothing at all.

Sometimes you have to look to your backup players to find it. Sometimes it's a diamond in the rough. Try 'em all out, and find your gems.

That is my biggest criticism of this coaching staff. Thank God they finally buckled on Saturday and tried some things.

So the half brain and big balls caused the fall at MSU, no counter weight.

I see:
1. Lewis pass blocking like it is coached.
2. Cotton coming off a double team block and stopping instead of going down field and blocking second level.

Not defending the play of either, but know what is going on before condemning the play.

That's exactly what I thought of Lewis on that play.

Kept me mouth shut though.

but you need to fake the sweep and do the reverse and only then get to the pass, why would you pass block that? you should block it like it's a run to get everyone committed, not go 5 yards into the backfield. look at how abdullah and pierson-el have to avoid him because he gets knocked back to far.

cotton, maybe it's just me, but he definitely looks like he's thinking really really hard about blocking on the 2nd level, then stops himself and runs down the line, which is a decent thing to do in case pierson-el doesn't have the throw and he needs to run.

You pass block it because it is a pass play. You can't run block then switch to pass blocking half way into the play. They do roll the pocket to get the defense out of position, but it is all done while pass blocking.

Technically it was a reverse with the option to throw it Bo said after the game. It was designed for Pierson-el to just run, but he saw Tommy wide open so he threw it. Great playcall indeed given the situation.

Back to the subject at hand........on a reverse (as I remember it from my playing days), you want to give the DE outside leverage, because the play is basically a misdirection. So just when the DE starts to get outside and thinks he's gonna make a play, BOOM......the play goes the other direction and he turns around right into a block.

It's set up that way to get the Defense moving one way, then they turn around and there's a giant wall of blockers (hopefully) waiting.

Yes, but the line has to block it as if it were a pass play.

Agree on everything else.

Yes they do, agreed completely. And actually, if we were to move their line backwards 5 yards, we would be giving their Defense a better opportunity to stop the reverse from happening. Further down the field = more time to react to a reverse.

On a reverse, you aren't trying to make a hole for anyone to run through.....you're trying to get one side of the field wide open. It's strategic blocking, not pancake blocking.

He did exactly what he was supposed to do on that play. The entire line did.

It's a reverse. You stay home and move the line the opposite direction that the play is going to end up going.
