Stats too simple.

Needs more blocked passes by players 6'1"-6'2.5" that are ages 25-29 that occur in the neutral zone between the 12th and 17th minute. I need to know if my team has the best 6'1.5" 27 year old at this in the league so I can brag on HFBoards about my team being the best at one analytic.

This is totally what good statistical analysis is about.

I mean, it's no "zone starts" or "Unblocked Shot Attempt Percentage - Tied" which are actual fucking things people apparently measure players by on NHL.com.

You've played hockey before I'm guessing. Do you not think that which zone you start out in affects what happens and what you're able to accomplish during your shift?

I don't need numbers to tell me that if I need a faceoff win in my zone, I'm going to "start" my best faceoff player.

Zone starts are largely about putting the numbers that you are willing to look at into proper context. If two players have the same goals, assists, plus/minus and TOI you might think they are relatively equal players. But if you know that one of them starts their shift in the offensive zone almost twice as often as the other you might reach a different conclusion.

So...it's basically just nerdifying the "eye test".

I think people who watch hockey enough know the difference between a soft, floating 60 point Euro and a 60 point "200 foot player". Hockey really doesn't need numbers like this.

It sounds like you're still kind of missing my point a little bit. It's not that the player starting his shift in the offensive zone all the time is even a different style of player than the other guy, but that by starting so many more of his shifts in the offensive zone he's had a greater opportunity to score (and less of an opportunity to be scored on) so the numbers he's put up are less impressive/valuable than the other guy who started so many shifts right next to his own goalie.

I also think that the type of evaluations you have to make at the NHL level are often a lot more complicated and a lot less obvious than what I've bolded. I'm not saying that you as a fan sitting at home have to care about making this evaluation of course, you can watch and follow the game however you like.
