What is the significance of an Overtime Loss?

I am looking at the standings and see Phoenix is 18-14-3 with GP at 35. So I see they count 18 wins and 14 losses to = 32, but the Overtime Loss is at 3 and that gives you the additional 3 games played to = 35 GP.

Now I know NHL got rid of ties, so what is the significance of the OT losses? Why does it count differently then the Losses? or at least not in the same catagory as the losses?

And the points come into a factor for tie breakers for seeding positions?

Teams still get a point for an OT loss (teams tied after 60 minutes), but different from a loss in regulation (0 points). Hence the distinction in the standings.

Edit: What biz said above.

I see the points column now. Ok, so im guessing WINS stilll mean more then overall points? Or do they go off more points standings? So for example

Team A. is 20-10 with 40 points

Team B. is 24-6 with 35 points

My guess is Team B is ahead of Team A in standings correct?

If teams are tied in the standings, the first tie-breaker is number of wins. If teams have the same number of wins, the next tie-breaker is regulation wins.

Team b in this case would have 48 points
wins worth 2

So technically possible for:
team A: 10-20-0=20 points
team B: 5-5-20=30 points
so team b ahead in the standings
