I guess it doesn't hurt to try new things out, although I think the game is pretty good as it currently stands...

The National Hockey League today revealed the various potential rule changes, rink modifications and strategic innovations that will be tested during the 2010 NHL Research, Development and Orientation Camp fueled by G Series August 18-19.

The camp, which will comprise four on-ice sessions over two days at the Toronto Maple Leafs practice facility (400 Kipling Avenue, Etobicoke, ON), will feature more than 30 of the top prospects eligible for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Participating players will be announced next week.

“I think everyone involved with the NHL thinks that our game is in really good shape,” said Brendan Shanahan, NHL Vice President of Hockey and Business Development. “I think that this is just a way of being progressive and keeping ourselves well informed of not just the fact that things work but why they work. Most companies or industries have research and development and that’s exactly what this is: it’s studying our own product.”

Two veteran NHL coaches—Ken Hitchcock and Dave King—will take part in the Camp and will be challenging the prospects with strategies which emphasize offensive play and creating scoring chances.

“We’re very fortunate to have coaches of the caliber of Ken Hitchcock and Dave King working with these talented young players,” Shanahan said. “Ken and Dave are two men who never turn off their hockey brains. They’re always thinking of ways to make the game better and to approach game strategy from different and innovative angles.”

Wednesday August 18 (all times ET; subject to change)

10:00 a.m. – Noon
• Hybrid icing rule; - thumbs up
• No line change for team committing an offside;
• Crease reset rule;
• Face-off variation (face-off controlled by whistle in place of traditional puck drop);
• Overtime: three minutes of 4-on-4; three minutes of 3-on-3; three minutes of 2-on- 2 followed by shootout (5 players per team). - yuck

2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
• Bigger crease;
• Verification goal line (additional line situated behind the goal line);
• Wider blue lines;
• Line changes zone in front of each bench;
• Face-off variations (infringement results in the offending player moving back further, three face-off dots down the middle of the ice);
• No icing the puck while shorthanded; - double yuck
• OT – three minutes of 4-on-4; three minutes of 3-on-3; three minutes of 2-on-2 with long line changes; followed by three shooters per team shootout (if tied after three shots then players who have shot previously can shoot again).

Thursday August 19 (all times ET; subject to change)

9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
• No touch icing;
• Team that commits an offside infraction cannot make a line change and face-off is in offending team zone;
• Face-off variation: after a face-off violation, opposition center may choose his face-off opponent;
• Second referee located off the playing surface; - interesting
• Delayed penalty rule
• No icing the puck while shorthanded;
• OT – 4-on-4 (with long line change) followed by a shootout with five players.

1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
• Variations of special teams play;
• OT – 4-on-4 (with long line change).

2-on-2 overtime? Jesus... no. Just no. Of course I would like my team's chances in that situation. Unleash the monster!

You mean Crosby (that selfish puck hog) hanging by the blue line while Malkin does all the work in the defensive zone before giving Sid a beauty breakaway pass?!?

lol. i like this one.
Hey! quit picking on Ryder (2 for 15 last year)
Corry Perry was only 6 for 28, Kovalchuk was 7 for 30,
Oscar Mollar was batting about .300 with over 100 draws taken.

lotsa defensemen going to need to practice a new skill, maybe
I don't suppose you can pick the goalie :)

some of those are horrible...some okay. i really dislike the no icing while SH...that's just another rouse to get more goals to sell the game. then you'd have half dead PKers on the ice. and the OT idea?? whhhhat??? someone was smoking something when thinking up that.

Three rule changes I would like to see:

1. You serve a full two minutes in the box regardless of how many powerplay goals are scored.

2. You score a shorthanded goal and you free your teammate from the penalty box.

3. A puck over the glass is not an automatic delay-of-game penalty (ref needs to make a judgement call).

that one should be the same infraction as an icing. face-off deep, no change.
it is the same intent (clear the zone to relieve pressure), and pretty much the same action (turning and firing it out o the zone), so should be the same result.
ref can have discretion to call penalty if it's deemed intentional.

I like it and it makes a ton of sense, ergo it won't be adopted :)

I'm with puck and dash on the delay of game. If that's a 2 minute minor, then icing should be too. Change it. Face off in your own zone, no change.

ya some of those are nuts.. i like no touch icing.. that way icing is even less of a breather for guys.. dont get the extra 10 seconds or so it takes to chase it down.. plus the whole injury thing.. the OT thing is nonsense, especially 2 on 2.. 3 on 3 would be kinda cool to watch, but you cant do 3 minutes and 3 minutes, thats ridiculous.. if you want different numbers do 5 mins of 4/4 and 5 of 3/3.. the double goal line thing doesn't make any sense, nor does moving faceoff takers back (if i understood that one correctly)

i like all 3 of dash's suggestions.. also something i wouldn't be against is beveling the posts so more pucks go in off the post.. doesnt change the size of the goal like some want to do (stupid), but increases goal scoring a little bit, plus goals off the post are really cool goals IMO

that's an interesting idea. because really, hockey is the only sport where when a player goes down you can't replace them...however i could see the controversy with coaches claiming a player was injured when in reality he would be replacing an underachieving player. still, it only seems fair.

I like the over the glass rule as it is now mainly because of the judgement call if it is reversed. I can really hear teams and fans bitching about how when team A obviously cleared it over the glass on purpose there was no call, but late in the game when team B accidentally cleared it over there was a call. Its a league wide conspiracy!

Its cool they can get players and coaches together to try things out like this.

pix - i think he meant you can do it like you said.. player under-achieving, put dress one of the scratches and get him in there.. or, like you said, if someone got hurt they'd obviously be 'underachieving'

comeds - i agree.. the fact that they are trying it out to see what it looks like is cool.. rather than just speculating and deciding off a few guys opinions and arguments to decide whether or not to implement stuff.. one of the reasons hockey is so cool to me is because they change it when stuff isn't working, unlike baseball, or at times, college football, where they are all about tradition

I've been advocating for this for a long time now. Hope it happens. It would make for some exciting moments.

I'd prefer they just have a tie, but if not, I think this is the lesser of all evils.

Now that would make PK's interesting. Sure would open up some special teams play. With Marleau getting PK time I wholeheartedly approve this rule change.

Speaking of rule changes, I forgot about this one - This will impact the smaller goalies the most, as they will all have to wear "form-fitting equipment".

The rule change nobody's mentioned: goalies to sport slimmed-down look this fall | MLive.com

that doesn't really seem fair.
poor Artus Irbe will never make a comeback now. Panger? done for.
does anyone remember the dresses John Garrett used to wear, to try to cover the five hole?

ahhh... found a pic
