What I don't understand is why they felt the need to come out and declare that he did NOT have the mumps. I mean, why bother?

Two days later though he definitely has the mumps. Just weird.

I assumed they were just waiting for the back to back with the Panthers to "diagnose" him

THEY HAD HIM IN THE EFFING LOCKER ROOM. There's one very obvious outward sign of the mumps, of which Crosby had. So, even if you're thinking it may NOT be the mumps, YOU DON'T LET THEM AROUND TEAMMATES until you're COMPLETELY sure it isn't! So all this "waiting on tests" stuff is fine, but hold him out until it's official. I don't know if the issue is weak MDs who let players walk all over them or just irresponsible doctors, but it was poorly handled. Sid was sent by the AT staff to a doctor (along with someone else I can't recall because they felt sick), and apparently that MD said he could return to play. Which is simply idiotic. I can't get over it. Just...so freaking stupid. Highly contagious disease possible? Probably should let them hang around the team!

I hear ya. :gaah:

Pretty dumb stuff there. We all saw that picture and said "That sure looks like the mumps to me."

How could these guys not even entertain the possibility? I mean to the point of letting him hang out in the locker room??!?! Brutal. I guess we'll see if it was just really stupid or catastrophic to the team in about 2-3 weeks (incubation time for the mumps, IIRC).

 :burt:

I know they had the team all do a blood test to see if it was incubating I guess. And I think this was before Sid broke out. Maybe that's why they thought he could be around the team? An old blood test? I don't know, I admit to this being out of my depth, but I know if one of my wrestling kids showed up with a fever, merely a fever, I send them home. I don't want that ANYWHERE near the team. I don't care if you're the captain, the best player, a professional, I don't want an outbreak through the room. Go home, it's for the good of the team. I don't expect the Pens, or any pro team, to tell the media everything going on with a guy health wise, most of it isn't really our business. I hate that fans think they're magically owed a guy's medical charts or something. That said, don't lie simply to get people to shut up. Sid explicitly said "if I had the mumps, they wouldn't let me in here." So, someone dropped the ball big time. Whomever it is probably shouldn't be involved with the team anymore.

So, I listened to the team doc, and apparently the Sid situation was complicated because he actually injured his salivary gland in a game vs. Carolina (had it grabbed/aggravated), and they apparently HAD tested blood previously, and it took some special test being sent to the CDC for them to diagnose him. Which seems pretty insane. Who knows.

Have any American players come down with it? Do other countries not vaccinate? Maybe all that free healthcare isn't all it's cracked up to be...
