Points-per-game and goals-per-game are major statistics. They're the skater's equivalent of GAA and SPCT.

I think that is giving him the benefit for being suspended and I dont think that should be the case.

It's a shame too. People should be able to give their opinion. It's what makes these boards enjoyable. Take them for what they are, someones opinion. You don't have to agree with them

I have to agree. Having a high goals/points per game numbers are great and all and can certainly help an argument for who is the best player. But as far who was more valuable to their team over a period of time, I'd favor the player who has the better totals over the player with the higher per game numbers, not that stats are everything but they are something. I'm speaking in general and not specifically referring to #8, but if a player misses games for whatever reason, and as a result can't score any many points as someone else, then how valuable to his team was he in coparison to the other player?

Also I have no idea what was wrong with your original comment either. If people are going to have that kind of attitude on this board then it doesn't stand a chance at being any better than the other board. For this purposes of MVP discussions, I don't consider per game stats major stats either.

I agree to some extent but not entirely. I wouldn't say they are the exact equivalent, at least not as far as relevance goes. The reason we use averages for goalies such as GAA and not pure totals is because goalies oviously try have lower goals against totals. Which means if we went by totals alone we would be rewarding goalies who have played fewer games, which wouldn't make any sense. Therefore GAA is the more relevant stat for goalies. But with scorers who try to have higher totals, I think it is fair to "penalize" them (for MVP purposes at least) for having lower numbers as a result of playing fewer games. Similarly we can't just look at total saves either because some goalies face way more shots than others.

That being said, even if they were the perfet equivalent to one another, you wouldn't hand out the vezina to a goalie with the best GAA and Save %age if he only plays 25-30 games. Now I know OV played a lot more than that so keep in mind I'm speaking in general here to make a point and not referring to him specifically. Every situation is different but like I said in my previous post, for the purposes of MVP consideration I don't consider goals and points per game a major statistic. The totals are what you want to look at.
