Report: NFL Plans To Expand Postseason Field To Seven Teams Per Conference « CBS Boston

Dan Patrick said on his radio show on Monday morning that NFL plans to add one more wild card to each conference, a move that would expand the playoff field from six to seven teams per conference. Andrew Perloff from The Dan Patrick Show tweeted the news on Monday.

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora tweeted that the NFL said no decision has been made, and that such a change “would have to be voted on by owners… To this point it hasn’t been presented to them. Of course, it could be at May meeting. [Patrick] may have inside info that enough votes are there [to support the change].

I'm not crazy about this to be honest. It would eliminate the #2 seed getting a bye week and all for the sake of letting another 'meh' team get in. (And yes, I'm aware that had this been in place this year, my Steelers would have made it).

Leave it the way it is.

god no leave it alone.

are we going to be like the NHL, where basically everyone is in? yes it sucks sometimes some good teams get left out but I don't feel like seeing 8-8 or 7-9 teams in the playoffs every year.

i heard this rumor several months ago. Not sure the players union will allow it if it's not written into the CBA.

Its like the NBA now where half the damn teams make the playoffs. You don't even need a good season to make it to the playoffs, just need to not suck completely.

The fact that wildcards even exist is enough of a concession to good teams who didn't win their divisions if you ask me.

:agree:

The NFL finally addressed that problem by moving as many division games to late in the season as possible. It was working pretty well too, the amount of meaningless regular season games has gone down a bunch but expanding the playoffs or reseeding them would blow that up.

I think they are going to do it, if not next season, soon. They're going to continue to put a heavy emphasis on the division games, very heavy back loaded schedules to decide division winners with meaningful games at the end and they are going to add another playoff team because it will bring more viewers and put another carrot out their for some team and their fans to go after.

I don't think they should. I think 2 wildcards are plenty with the 4 division winners. But if I had to bet, i would bet on it being expanded soon.

They won't be reseeding. I would be very surprised if that is anything that is remotely considered.

I'd like to return to one WC game per conference.

I agree, I think it's going to happen.

I don't know if the NFLPA will be for or against it. Another team will get in but on the other hand a top seed loses the bye week.

Why would the union object? Seems to me that the union would favor the change, since more players would get a playoff check.

Mistake

I think PIT was playing their best football and would've been a tough out, but I hope the owners don't go this route...the owners want parity and they're getting it...don't reward it though.

Had we done it this year, the Steelers get in as the #7 seed and are hosted by the Pats, who would have lost the bye week. (AFC).
