Actually Stanford runs a pro style offense and defense under David Shaw. Hey...we could have had Trubisky instead hahaaa...love the pick and the picks we hockey punched the Bears for.

I agree with you on the Stanford offense. The big linemen and a run first system always translates to the pros because its about size and power. Their defense is college all the way though; small, quick defenders but not a lot of lateral speed. They each cover a certain gap and that is all they know. And that does not transfer to the pro game well as we see by the dearth of excellent Stanford defensive players at the pro level.

I absolutely LOVE the Reuben Foster pick. Of all the players in the draft, he was the one I wanted. I can't believe we got him.

He'll be a good one I think. He'll play outside for the first couple downs and can kick inside on 3rd down. I'm not trying to be right...just hoping. Thomas combined with Buckner, Armsted, and Lynch will be a formidable force and/or a solid rotation.

Thomas was most likely a wasted pick but Foster has a chance to be an All Pro; he is outstanding.

Michael Benett plays a big role in their defense, and i'd think Thomas is even more explosive? On top of that, we keep reading Thomas is good against the run. That was major weakness for our D.

IF we later find he can be moved around (and play effectively), that is even better. Then offenses will have a hard time pass blocking.

i recall reading our now 4-3 is about one gapping?

yeah this is simplifying it, but don't think Stanford's D is THAT big a deal? The majority of prospects have to adjust to their NFL teams, whether on offense or defense.

Certainly a waste of money, but do you keep him because of that, and hurt the future?

yeah, i think the rotation and ability to mix the pressure points, is enticing. this is getting ahead of them so we'll see how it goes? Plus, no guarantee we go into the season with all these current D linemen.

On 'obvious' passing downs, i'd think you could mix in Blair too? Maybe Carradine finally gets back to what he does best...MAYBE?

Yep, but thats the way Lynch has to think. Fill this roster with guys who fit, not worry about who's carried over? In the NFL, time is warp speed.

Of course, Lynch is GREATLY helped by the cap situation Baalke left him with. Baalke could've racked up the cap trying to save his job, but he didn't.

Funny story emerging about Foster....dude was on the line with the Saints who believed they were about to draft him, when the Niners jumped ahead of N.O. The Niners also gave him a shout when the Saints were rolling out the red carpet for Foster, and the media asked him if it was awkward knowing that SF was taking him while New Orleans was wooing him.

His speed, power and nose for the ball remind me so much of Bowman. Man, I hope Bowman is able to come back. I'd love to see these two guys on the inside on opening day.

Hope so. Not sure he's big enough to hold down an inside spot but you never know. Lots of scouts like him but what concerned me was the statement that he doesn't play well against "Big and Strong" players on the O Line. In the NFL Every O lineman is big and strong. That seems to be the knock on all Stanford D Linemen in the pros; they tend to be "tweeners".

Fair enough. I think we'll find out quickly about him. if he's what I think he is, he'll be exposed quickly. If he's one of those guys who keeps working, improving and continues to grow he'll have a chance

I think he'll do better in a 4-3 than he would in a 3-4. Perhaps that is what the 49ers see in him. I did see someone call him "The second best player in the draft". So he certainly must have something that a layman like myself is missing or doesn't see.

I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to see the Niners get Foster though. He is such an impact player. I wonder if the failed piss test causes him to miss the first four games? DO you know?

Not now...he's just part of the NFL drug protocol, so something could happen if there is another positive...it looks like he drank a lot of water, which Joe Thomas says happened to him and a lot of other NFL guys so it gives off a bad stigma to guys coming into the league.

It's not the reason he fell either....that is all on his shoulder with perhaps some on his behaviour at the combine.

true, everyone will be bigger than him, so that is a legit concern.

He plays defense and went to Stanford. Their defensive system is not suited to the pro game and their high drafted players are almost always busts in the NFL.

Thomas is the first Stanford Defensive player drafted this highly ever or at least in the common draft era.
