Preventing Ryzen Burnout: Motherboard Makers Issue New Firmware

Most of the major AM5 motherboard vendors have new BIOS downloads ready to limit SoC voltages to safe levels.

Gonna have to make sure to have that BIOS up to date. But I would have anyway.

I'm not going to be overclocking out of the box with this anyway. I'm getting high-end, and it's not like it's going to be a bottleneck at stock settings right now. That's something to think about for 2025-ish.

And I'll avoid messing with any EXPO timing gains too.

Everything is bought (waiting on the case that is due on Friday), except for a new monitor. Still trying to decide on that one. My best bud offered me a Gigabyte G27Q 144Hz 1440p for free, if I want it (He upgraded to 4k and didn't need it anymore). But I'm considering 4k and/or OLED options.

i wouldnt worry about it. if it happens it happens... probably less than .01% chance of happening. and probably 0% if youre not fucking with the updated bios. There something to be said for buying shit that you dont have to worry about.

Built, but not ready to POST yet. Mobo has one 3.2 and one 3.2c header, but that leaves two USB on top dun, so I ordered a USB 3.2 to USB 2.0 adapter on newegg so they are at least usable.

PSU came with piggybacked 6+2 and 6+2 pin on an 8 pin, and I don't think I should be piggybacking this card, AND I don't want to use two of these cables and have the extra 6+2's just hanging there. So I'm calling MSI today to see if they sell any straight 8 pin/6+2. I looked online but there aren't any explicit MSI compatible aftermarket cables that I can see.

Also decided that I'll have negative pressure here, so I ordered 3 more fans. Two will go just below the PSU pulling in air and across the GPU, and one will go in a cradle outside the case, behind the GPU.

After I have that done, I'll power it on.

I'm not tracking with you on this one. USB is backwards compatible, so a USB 2 device will work in a USB 3 port. A USB 3 device will not work in a USB 2 port. The USB 2 ports you are referencing, are they on your case? Do you have any USB 3 ports on your case? If you have both, chances are they are tied together, even if you have cables running from your case for both types of ports.

No, it's not the USB device that is the problem.

The USB header that plugs into the motherboard is 3.2. I have one 3.2 port, but two headers that I could plug in for different USB panels in the front. They are not tied together, there are separate panels, and it has it's own 3.2 header plug that I can't plug in.

The type C above plugs in too, but after that there are no more ports on the Mobo for the other two standard USB. The header that comes out of those two USB is a type 3.2, so I need to convert that down to 2.0 because I DO have some 2.0 ports available.

Yup. It came with the pool table. The ping pong top is in two pieces and lifts right off. It's nice for keeping the felt protected, and it's a useful workspace for us.

It sounds like you have 2 USB 3 headers, but only 1 spot left? Get a USB 3 Y cable.
