Brian Rosenthal talked to TO and found out these are our main targets. Brian then rated each of these from 1-10.
John Groce, Ohio (6.5) -- He's got Big Ten ties, what with his time as associate head coach at Ohio State, from 2006-08. And he's done pretty well on his own at Ohio, too, leading the Bobcats to the NCAA Tournament last season, and to 25 wins so far this season. He's an Indiana native.
Ben Howland, UCLA (8) -- Don't scoff at this name. Howland, who worked under NU associate athletic director Marc Boehm at Pittsburgh, just might be looking to stay ahead of the posse in Westwood. UCLA has hit a rough patch, and last week's expose in Sports Illustrated won't help matters. You know, that damning piece about lack of discipline in UCLA's program. Doesn't sound like something Tom Osborne would go for, right? Well, can Nebraska afford to overlook a guy who's been to three NCAA Final Fours — especially when he just might be interested in NU?
Gregg Marshall, Wichita State (8.5) -- Put Marshall's name right up there with Shaka Smart when listing the hottest coaching candidates. He signed a seven-year deal with WSU after leading the Shockers to last year's NIT title — during which they pounded Nebraska — and many are expecting a deep run in this year's NCAA Tournament. Marshall's name has also been linked to South Carolina — never mind there's not an opening there. Not yet, anyway.
Tim Miles, Colorado State (5) -- You want a coach who leads Nebraska kids to the NCAA Tournament? Well, it looks like Miles will do just that this season with the Rams, who have a roster featuring four Nebraskans and an RPI high enough to warrant an at-large bid. Of course, there's the matter of whether Miles can recruit Big Ten talent to Lincoln. But his outgoing personality, work ethic and values will be attractive to Osborne. Expect Miles' phone to ring.
Shaka Smart, VCU (9) -- Smart was among the hottest names in coaching circles after VCU's Cinderella run to the Final Four last season. He's not cooled off much, either, after leading the Rams to a 26-8 record and another trip to the NCAA Tournament, despite losing three starters. His up-tempo, trapping style would be a hit in Lincoln. One problem: He's hot on Illinois' list, too, and worked previously for current Illinois AD Mike Thomas when the two were at Akron. But don't look for NU to go away without a fight — even with the high price tag.
