nhl blew it. if the nhl ever had the chance to grow the game rapidly it was now. nba and nfl locking out in the same season and espn looking for a sport to cover. that will never happen again in my lifetime

and fuck nbc. i have hated them ever since the conference finals a few years back where they pulled the plug and went to pre race kentucky derby

Agreed. They've gotten better, but the fact of the matter is they still suck. I wish I had CBC.

Tough for ESPN to win when NBC/Versus held the trump card with the rights to match competing offers. I reckon ESPN wanted hockey, just not quite badly enough to overpay.

yea that's true. but i still think espn would be the better option, even though i don't really like them. way more casual sports fans watch espn than versus

This blows. I know everyone hates ESPN, but I just wanted more games. It's ridiculous that I can only watch half the playoff games.

Springing for center ice next season I suppose.

NHL just got a good 10 year deal with NBC/Versus and will have more games on and got a good chunk of change.

This BS that this was the big chance for the NHL is just that...BS. When the NBA and NFL come back ESPN would have curb stomped the NHL right out again. You know it and I know it.

Ill say it again ... Ed Snider ... even if he's just one guy out of 30 ... I dont see how the other members of the board of governors or executive committee would vote in a direction that would hurt the financial interests of a another member of the executive committee

loki read the link they are going to have more games on. If you read my post you know what I feel about ESPN. It was at one time great now it blows and has treated hockey like shit. I can't understand why ANY hockey fan would want another pat on the head from these pricks.

Even though I watch most of games online, I agree.
I may be wrong on this, but when I got Versus, they seemed to only show games on Monday and Tuesday nights anyways.
Do they show non-playoff games every day now?
I don't see why there can't be deals to multiple networks to show games that ones with higher priority aren't showing.
Edit: Strange enough, a lot of my online feeds come from ESPN America broadcasted in Europe. So, they do show hockey and broadcast it every day but just not here.

Double Edit: Need to read Boss's link on showing more games.

nope i disagree. doesn't matter if nhl is only 3rd or whatever on the totem pole. it would still get brought up more on their sports shows like ath and pti which would imo would help increase the casual sports fan interest. this is what versus is lacking. they need to somehow attract the casual sport fan to tune in when there is nothing else to watch on tv. fact is versus has nothing that would attract those casual fans

I wish I had TSN. I know its blasphemy but in my opinion CBC has been getting more and more bush league all the time.

I think its a fine move by Versus and NBC. I dont think ESPN respects the game and I do not think giving them a contract hoping they reverse their trend of the half decade would be a wise idea. The NHL doesnt need ESPN at all.

But the NHL is trying to attract the casual fan by holding the winter classic on January first when all the casual fans are watching college football :L

Contract calls for 100 non-playoff games per year.

I don't see why there can't be deals to multiple networks to show games that ones with higher priority aren't showing.

Exclusivity is fairly common on these deals, b/c the network wants to be known as the home of sport X and doesn't want to have to compete with another network for marquee games. Luckily, networks all have cable arms these days which means they can show games on Versus on the weeknights and NBC on weekends/holidays, so it functions much like a multi-network deal.

Good deal for the NHL - the money is the important thing here, IMO. They just got a BIG, BIG raise.

They didn't get brought up on those shows when ESPN had them before what makes you think it would be different now?

At least with Versus they talk hockey during the intermissions if you remember on ESPN they talked, Basketball, Football, Bowling, Pie eating, Running of the bulls and oh yeah, BTW we have a hockey game on.

I guess we agree to disagree.

There could be a day in the not-too-distant future when there is no NHL hockey on CBC (and the main reason is that the CBC is essentially broke).
