In the late 60’s and most of the 70’s, professional basketball was divided into two major leagues, the NBA and the ABA. If you think the old days of pro basketball lacked flash, you are sorely mistaken. The ABA was considered the flashier of two leagues in large part because of the red, white, and blue basketball as well as the fact that it had adopted the three-point shot prior to the NBA.

Among Dr. J’s top supporting players with the New York Nets (now the Brooklyn Nets) was Brian Taylor, a 6’2” scoring point guard. Taylor chose the ABA over the NBA in spite of being selected 23rd overall by the Sonics in the 1972 NBA Draft. As a rookie with the Nets, Taylor averaged 15.3 points per game during the 1972-73 season. It was that following offseason that the Nets had acquired Erving in a trade with Virginia, and Taylor sacrificed his role for the good of the team, as the Nets won the ABA title in 1974, defeating the Utah Stars in the ABA Finals. 1974-75 saw Taylor lead the ABA in steals, but the Nets would lose to the Spirits of St. Louis in the first round. Taylor finished second in the ABA in steals per game in 1975-76 and averaged 15.8 points per game in the Playoffs as the Nets upset the Denver Nuggets in the 1976 Finals.

After the ABA-NBA merger in 1976, Taylor latched on with the Kansas City Kings (now the Sacramento Kings) and showed the NBA what he was made of, averaging 17.0 points and 4.4 assists in 1976-77. He would also spend time with the Denver Nuggets and San Diego Clippers before hanging ‘em up in 1982.

Taylor finished his NBA career with averages of 12.3 points and 4.5 assists per game, along with 14.0 points and 3.7 assists in the ABA. Taylor currently works as Executive director for Teleos Preparatory Academy in Phoenix.
