Point is there is no lock you sign someone big after kobe retires. If I'm Dwight going back to LA is my 3rd option

With the money that the Lakers have coming off the books, the L.A. lifestyle that so many of these guys seem to like and the fact that the Lakers have always been willing to spend. I doubt they'll have too much trouble finding big name players who are willing to take their money.

Let's me real now TF12. If they don't get LBJ who exactly are they getting in 2014? Joe Johnson?

BTW Carmelo and Howard doesn't get you a title.

You say that, "Melo has to take a long extended look in the mirror and ask himself some tough questions. Where is he failing as a leader? How multi dimensional is he?"

Does melo have to ask himself these questions while looking at his reflection in the mirror? Or could he do it while sitting in a chair, or perhaps walking on the beach?

Just curious.
You are too stupid for words. Please tell me you are not serious?

The SPURS will make a big run at Al Jefferson.

They came pretty close in February, but they did not want to teach him pick and roll basketball as a rental. It would have cost them Splitter for no guarantees of resigning.

Jefferson idolizes Duncan. He wants to play for the Spurs and his mentor Timmy.
The SPURS are his first choice.

I am not entirely sure his isolation style post play works in the pick and roll, but they are grooming Cory Joseph to be the next point man who runs the traditional sets a little better.

Coach Pop can groom him during a full offseason to play more pick and roll as well.

IF the Spurs don't resign Manu Ginobili (retirement???), they will have a lot of cap room.

They can either sign Jefferson outright (if Manu is done), or some combination of sign and trade with Splitter and Blair.

Utah would gladly take those assets rather than get nothing whatsoever.
At that point, they have two very viable trade assets in Splitter and Blair.

Splitter will be in much higher demand than most people think.
He is a true 7 footer who can do a little bit of everything for a big man.

Blair is a very undervalued asset. He couldn't find playing time with the addition of Boris Diaw who was better for the Spurs motion based offensive system, but Dajuan Blair is a great rebounder and has value.

............

Even if Jefferson is not the plan, the Spurs would still have Splitter and lots of cap space to make a move.

The risk I'm talking about is later on in his contract if he re-signs. The last 3 years looks like a risk if he signs back with LAL for 5 more years. Kobe, Nash, and Pau will all be gone 2 years from now and it is not a slam dunk you sign a big name player in 2014.

In a couple seasons, the Rockets roster is pretty bleak as well (relative to the Lakers). As of now, Harden is the only guaranteed contract for the 2015/2016 season. Houston could have a nice team next season with Howard, but they will need to do a lot of work to complete that roster the following season.

How will Howard mesh in Houston anyway? You have a ball dominating guard that loves running PnRs. Howard is good in the PnR but doesn't like the PnR. He prefers to post up.

Honestly, I really don't care if he re-signs or not!! If he does, great!! As I said, the Lakers go with basically the same team that they had this year, hopefully minus the injuries and then the Lakers re-build around him next summer.

If he doesn't, then they go with basically the same team minus Dwight, take their lumps for a season and then re-build next summer.

3rd option, is the rumored sign and trade with the Clips. I think this one is probably least likely, but at this point......who really knows?

I get the feeling that the front office is more inclined to let Howard walk away then to work a S&T. I think they'd rather have the cap space for the summer of 2014 then take on salary in a S&T.

Its the old Jedi mind trick. "You cant handle being a Laker. We don't want you anyways!". I got a feeling you may be right though. That younger Buss is not too bright. No big time FA will come to LA willingly if Kobe is the center peice.

What is your second option?

Well if I'm howard this will be my 3 options

1) Team up with CP3. I don't care if it is in LA or ATL but I just need to be with him.

2) Team up with James Harden who is a young player getting set to enter his prime.

3) Re-Sign with the Lakers and hope that when Kobe retires, the organization is able to replace him with a player of his caliber.

Any big time FA that signs in LA in 2014 will be the centerpiece (unless D12 is still here).

1) Team up with CP3. I don't care if it is in LA or ATL but I just need to be with him.

ATL is really the only place where both can outright sign as FAs. It will take a S&T to get together on the Clippers. CP3 could always sign a cheap one year contract with the Lakers then get paid in the summer of 2014 :hope:

2) Team up with James Harden who is a young player getting set to enter his prime.

The problem I see with Houston is the same you think the Lakers will have in a couple of seasons. There is little certainty with the Rockets roster after these next couple of seasons. In short terms, the Rockets look good. There is uncertainty looking long term though.

3) Re-Sign with the Lakers and hope that when Kobe retires, the organization is able to replace him with a player of his caliber.

That's the hope. Sign in LA and then reload in the summer of 2014. I think any little chance the Lakers would have had signing Lebron just went out the window. The more titles Miami wins, the more chance Lebrons stays.

Can't Howard team up with CP3 with the Clippers?

You really think the Lakers will turn down a deal of let's say Bledsoe & Blake for Howard? Think about it you keep Pau and move him to Center and now when Nash retires you have a good PG to replace him.

And I agree with you about LBJ. All we have to do now is get rid of Bosh either this yr or next year for a bigger and better player

That's what I said. It would take a S&T to get to the Clippers. I agree that a Griffin/Bledsoe deal would give the Lakers something instead of nothing. I just get the feeling at this point that the Lakers front office is leaning more towards letting him walk if he doesn't resign.

Easier said than done. Bosh has a big contract with several years left.

Agree. If we can't get rid of Bosh, I wouldn't mind a C like Oden and move Bosh back to his real position which is PF

So the question is what Boston does with the rest of the roster.

They'll probably drop Pierce and Jason Terry. My guess is they both try to work on a deal with the Clippers. The big question is whether Garnet retires or tries to get out of Boston as well.
