I don't hate Ohtani.

Hate the system. it's stupid.
Been this way quite a while unfortunately. Some good players get forced out before their time or have to play pretty cheap because of this stuff. They are basically paying for the first 6 years of the contract, the rest will be charity.

Time to establish a cap ceiling and floor, MLB

the Mega deals are stupid as fuck.

Yep without a doubt. Didn't think he would get more than 550 or 600

Meh, I get the point of caps and floors, but I don't really agree with them. Especially caps. If one team can/is willing to spend more than another, they should be able to.

We've all said on here at 1 time or another that teams make far more money off of their superstars than they can ever pay them. If a team is willing to pay them more and maybe close that gap some, why shouldn't they be able to?

Having said that, I'm not really a fan of $700 million for Ohtani given his recent health issues. I get that they're paying for an elite everyday hitter and an elite starting pitcher in one player...But he's also had 2 "procedures" on his elbow now (no one seems to want to say this last one was Tommy John surgery, but it sure sounds a lot like Tommy John surgery). We know he's not going to be able to pitch this coming season so the thing the Dodgers actually need him for the most, he's not going to be available for.

I hope I'm wrong, but at that price, this seems like it has the potential to end up being a big mistake. Hell, they probably could have gotten 2 high level pitchers and at least a solid bat for what they're going to pay Ohtani.

Coming from the Yankees fan......LOL.

Not sure what makes it "hating". Because it's the Dodgers/a big market team?

I think if he got that amount from anyone else, folks who don't like it, still wouldn't.

That's my concern too. As I said above, he's had 2 elbow procedures. In 5 years, the Dodgers could be paying him $70 million per for his bat. That's a helluva lot of money for a bat. No matter how good it is.

I am with you it could be an overpay but it isn’t for what you mention. They will make so much off Ohtani and he is the arguably the best superstar since Bonds. Totally worth it.

Teams with lack of market and cheap ownership have zero chance unless everything goes their way. A team like the Rays is a perfect example. No fans/lack of revenue but they make great moves, develop players and beneficial trades. They made a WS but there is a clear ceiling. It is basically impossible to compete. I would think the same way if my team was a big spender. Other sports have these rules and that makes baseball unique and it wasn’t so lopsided years ago but it is now.

They get the money back with marketing him in Japan and the US though
