Game Thread: National Championship Game - Gonzaga vs. UNC

yeah, big drop off. Making the finals two years in a row with half a dozen 5-star players and winning a championship!! Yup, this must suck. How are you tarhole fans able to deal with this?

Gonzaga should be really good next year.

If NWG and Collins both come back, then Gonzaga will be in the conversation to make it back to the FF for sure. NWG I think should come back, he's been a fringe 2nd round pick in some mocks, and he under performed in the NCAA tournament and didn't raise his draft stock. Collins is more iffy though. Even with his limited minutes, some mocks had him as a lottery pick. We'll see what he decides to do, but I do think he still has things he can learn from another year in college. In particular he needs to limit the amount of fouls he commits, he was in foul trouble in a lot of games this year.

I'm mostly neutral when it comes to the big dance, since my team never makes it (Illinois State). I kinda hate the selection committee because of it since there were years they definitely deserved it.

Anyway, does anyone else feel like UNC was just handed the title by the referees? The refs gave them the Kentucky game. The refs missed big calls at the end of the Oregon game, and then they reared their ugly heads in this title game. Had Zach Collins not fouled out and the referees actually allowed defense in the paint, that game looks an awful lot different. My big gripe with the NBA is the referees decide every close game with missed/phantom calls. That's kind of what happened with UNC this year.

The most entertaining Center or Power forward on the court was Zach Collins. He was making shots in the post, rebounding well and I thought playing great defense. He was called for ticky tack fouls that took him out of the game. Unless you are a UNC fan I don't really see how that entertains a national audience. I felt bad for Collins but I think that he has a bright future.

Official doesn't even appear to be looking at the ball or really even the players.

With that said, Gonzaga didn't do their job on the glass and missed open shots in the 1st and lost. Have to tip my cap to UNC for winning, pains me to say it but they won and they are the Champs.

If they both come back, I'd have them preseason #1. They were playing without two 4 star recruits this year because they were both lost to season ending injuries(they probably could have played, but it would have only been for the last couple weeks so they redshirted). Plus they have another 4 star big coming in as well. They'll have more depth next year for sure, if everyone comes back. If you thought they had a depth of bigs this year, next year they'll have 5 if everyone comes back. But I think Collins may leave, and you can't really blame him. Although I think another year of school would do him wonders, not only for his preparation at the next level, but potentially being a top 3 pick in 2018.

I don't think there was intent to make UNC win. I do think though that they called the game too tight. If Karnowski hits a few more shots then the Bulldogs win. I would have liked to have seen what Collins could have done with more time in the game. Congratulations UNC.

You named players that were at Carolina when the investigation turned to basketball. They've recruited ONE McDonalds All-American since their class. So, in the three recruiting classes (15, 16, and 17) since the investigation they've gotten one McDonalds All American

That was an awful call. This is why I'm in favor of eliminating replay. If you can't get it right with replay, and if replay doesn't allow for that call to be fixed. A call most of us could see before it ever went to replay then there's no need to have replay, no need to slow the game down.

It wasn't the only instance of that this game. Gonzaga airballed a three pointer that went out of bounds. Refs gave them the ball back and they made a three. Bad calls happened.

Yeah, Duke sure showed why they were the #1 favorite to win it all but couldn't get it done in the tourney once again. UNC won the title with their floor leader having 2 sprained ankles for multiple games.
