In my 3 leagues coming this season I want to follow the same formula(I am sure I wont follow this formula in any of my leagues)...

But the formula I want to try out is.

Round
1. QB
2. TE
3.WR
4.RB
5.RB
6.RB
7.WR
____________

as my top 7 picks... I am in one 12 team league, one 14 team league and one 10 team league...

I am hoping I get to try this strategy out... But I am sure I will abandon it during the draft...

scenarios that will force you to abandon your insanely early drafting strategy:

1) You pick at the end of the 1st round, and Peyton and Brees are gone
2) Jimmy Graham gets taken in the 2nd round, before your pick
3) Any WR worth taking in the 3rd round gets drafted before your pick
4) People get a little gun shy on RBs after last year's 1st round team-destroyers, and you have great value fall to you in the 2nd round

The only league I even consider taking specific positions over value is my 4-plyr keeper league, where I can set up my core group and see where my weaknesses are before starting the draft.

just some thoughts, but try to stick to the plan, and share who you end up getting. might be on to something with the 1st to market on QB/TE instead of joining the ranks of the 1st/2nd rd RB/WR drafters

I agree, that it is unlikely I will be able to follow this strategy to its potential, and I am not dumb enough to stick to it if I am not getting the players... But I think if followed correctly this is the BEST strategy...

Well, every league is different and to adopt a strategy such as you have laid out, there is obviously more to the story. We don't know your draft position or league scoring so there not much anyone can add in the way of specific advise. We can only comment with the assumption it is a standard league with standard scoring. In that case, if you even semi-stick to the position by round strategy proposed, you are making a mistake. In a 12 or 14 team league by Rd 4 you will have you pick of RB's such as Gerhart or Sjax as your #1, and part timers in rd 5 & 6. A seventh rd WR (your WR #2) will net you the likes of Nicks, Golden Tate or maybe Dwayne Bowe - not horrible but more in line with #3 receivers. With that said, perhaps the strategy will be ok in the 10 team league.
But why not just draft by using best available as the foundation rather than being position specific ?? You can still target certain players or positions, but the main advantage is limiting how much you stretch to get them.

I would call you crazy, but to each his own.

I always "want" to draft this way... but never do.

1. WR
2. WR
3. WR (depending on the roster settings...for this scenario I'll leave out the flex)
4. RB
5. RB
6. RB
7. QB
8. WR
9. RB
10 TE

...in a flex league, just take out the round 3 WR, and move everyone up one... my point being, any team that has 3 top 10 receivers should win out.. since late QB's can get you points, and RB's are very plentysome with short term value, and waiver adds, and injuries, and "tandems".... getting the consistency at WR is my favorite thing to think about pre-draft... just rarely happens for me... we'll shall see this year.

Just from my experiences, what I find is the differential between elite QB and average fantasy QB is just too much... and same thing with TE... I find that RB and WR get so injured during the season that you are using Free agency players often... And you can get great value WR,RB later on in the draft...

But like you, just because I want to go a certain way, does not mean I will... and will likely not go that way... But if I can get either Brees, Manning, Rodgers and jimmy graham as my first 2 picks I would be very happy...

I have a strategy too. But it usually gets thrown out if I don't get the first, second or third pick. (I'm finding that there are a lot of players that I don't like.) Sure, there are guys that I 'd like to target. Sometimes I get caught reaching too early for them. But on the other side of the coin, there are times where I let the draft dictate who I was going to draft, in which case I would select the best available player. That hasn't always worked out either.

I have many strategies based on who my first pick is. If the top six backs are gone, I pick the best available advantage. Since someone in the top six will take Peyton, and I fall in the bottom 3, I target Calvin AND Graham to have and advantage over everyone at wr and te. If I'm not able to get one or both, I dip into my secondary rbs and try to pick a few of the best of the rest available.

I also don't like Peyton in the first this year, but don't have to worry cuz he won't fall out of the top 5 since someone will draft him.
