My analysis of this draft starts here

1st we acquired 3 picks in next years draft . we got a 4th , 5th and 6th for next year so by my count we have a 1st 2nd 3rd 2 4ths a 5th 2 6ths and a 7th for a total of nine picks going into a year in which we have 40- 50 mil in cap space and some key resigns . KC, Reed , baker , gallette and even more in 2018

so this draft set us up well for the future

now lets grade the addressing of needs we needed a big red zone target we got 1 , we needed a safety we got one , we needed a ILB who can tackle , we got one , we needed an rb we got one

we needed d/line help . we came up short with really only getting a young NT candidate who is a rotational guy . we needed a center and we failed there as well . we needed a project qb and i feel we could have had a better selection then sudfeld

overall grade on addressing needs C+ gambling on taking the wr cost us a chance at a d/lineman to build around but the lesser needs were filled in nicely . also adding a draft pick for nothing was simple genius

now for player grades

1) docston wr 6-2 205 lbs a guy who has great hands , can get deep , and contort his body helping his qb get completions on "bad " throws he should replace garcon in 17 . great part is we picked up a draft pick for free we have garcon DJ crowder grant and ross here b+

2) cravens SS /dimebacker . a lot of people wanted the next sean taylor . this kid could be as close as you get . should be a mid season starter the good DT's were off the board so great BPA pick we have nacho bruton jarret hall and blackmon and cravens at safety much better depth b+

3) fuller CB 6-0 200 lbs , this kid is a find albeit not at a position of need . however he will make a culliver expendable if his play doesnt improve or price tag is too rich . we have norman , cully , breeland tolar fuller and dunbar at cb with blacmon and even hall in a pinch great depth b-

5) matt ioannidas DT 6-2 6-3 299 strong , strong guy should fit in nice with our rotation for a 5th rounder he should help us with about 15 snaps a game as a rookie . b-

6) nate sudfield qb 6-6 240 lbs perhaps the worst pick of our draft . however he will get good coaching , 2 good mentor qbs and time on the PS i suspect . he has some tools but i just felt like we could have done better . c-
7a) Stehen daniels ILB 5-11 243 lbs . this guy is a thumper . will start out on ST's but by year 2 this could team with last years 5th spaight and we could have 2 head bangers as starters at ILB rarely do you get a starter in round 7 but we have a potential one here JR LBF grade A

7b) kieth marshall RB 5-11 219 4.31 speed . rarely do you find this kind of speed in round 7 at RB i expect by mid season he will be a contributor on offense adding a change of pace to jones . great flier pick here grade A

my overall grade is a b- based on not getting enough d/lineman early however it was made up for in extra picks next draft and some really good individual talent . the only one i dont see kmaking the team is sudfeld but he will be a practice squad guy so we can get extra talent on the field on sunday not because he isnt a solid 3 qb

By going Wr in round 1 that meant that we bypassed on all the dline talent. So if you are on board with Doctson you cant complain about not getting DL b/c the players simply weren't there in the 2nd. You can make an argument for drafting Bullard with the 2nd round pick but Cravens does so much more. He can play two positions so he is much more valuable to the team than a De at this point.

For the players we got and where we go them plus getting three picks next year you cant complain about this draft. Its very possible the we lose both Garcon and jax next year so WR was the greater need for the future and now b/c of Jackson's injury history.

If we had bypassed on WR, what would we have done next season? Typically, WRs need at least a year to become truly productive. That would be really bad if we can't resign DJ.

I agree, that is why the Doctson pick was so important and it trumped DL. Very possible DJ leaves next year.

Plus Doctson's grade was higher than all the DL available at pick #22. So I cant see why people are mad we didn't get a dl. The draft didn't dictate to us to get a dl.

I think DJ will be back. There was a difference our offense and KC went crazy when he came back.

Well of course there was a difference b/c Ryan Grant had to play and he offered no deep threat at all. If Jax wants huge money they might let him walk b/c of his age and injury history. Plus KC and Reed take presentence.

I doubt he asks for more than he is making now.

Ill just post my thoughts here so we dont have 83 different draft thoughts threads lol.

Doctson - Loved the pick. Probably my favorite WR in the draft and he has huge upside. Good to be ahead of PG and DJ possibly leaving

Cravens - At first not a fan but the more I think about it, the more I like it. Seems to be a good player, we needed help at safety and I like the role he could play on our defense.

Fuller - Not a need pick at all but I really like the player. If he returns to pre injury form could be a great pick.

Ionnaidis - I like it. Finally DL and as Mayock and others noted he couldve been a 2nd rounder in most drafts. I think we need all the DL help we can get and he should be at least a serviceable player there for us.

Sudfield - Really dont like this pick. Dont think hes that good and I wouldve rather seen somebody else.

Daniels - Dont know much about him but we could use some ILB depth so fine with me.

Marshall - Love this pick. Think he has a ton of potential, and really could push Jones for carries this year.

All in all I like the players. The lack of legit DLmen though does concern me. Baker is the only one I trust. After that.....ehhhhhhhhhhh. Which is a shame because Id rather not waste a good year of paying Norman $15 mil. Im willing to see how it goes though because coming into the offseason I dont think there was any plan to compete for a SB this coming year.

Very nice evaluation, not a lot to disagree with but just for kicks, there are questions about the health of both Fuller and Marshall. Daniels has major questions about his cover skills. Man that all I've got to nic pic over, there's really not a lot of difference between your B- and my C+ Good Job!

Marshall had a major knee injury and missed a lot of PT, if he's fully recovered SM could be charged with grand larceny!!
Didn't make sense to draft a QB that needs a whole lot of work just to compete for the role of chief clipboard holder. Oh well, guess the team that stated that it wants competition everywhere, have made QB the exception.

Trades or castoffs? Whatcha got in mind Coach? There is one team that I'm keeping a close eye on with respect to what they are going to do at center. If they cut or want to move their current starter, we should jump on that. If the same holds cor Pouncey and his health is good then we should jump on that. Right now studying other teams DLmen

NO chance they actually thought they could get the D-lineman in the 2nd round and the guys they liked came off the board and we went with the best player available at that point??

I can fully agree that there wasnt a D-lineman left on the board worthy of the 53rd pick for us, thus we went with Cravens. But one has to wonder if he was actually the plan B when the D-lineman went off the board before we picked.

Doesn't matter Shark. You said you were on board with the Doctson pick. So you cant get mad at this draft b/c there was no dl there at #53 except for Bullard. Cravens offers more than Bullard so we went Cravens. Simple as that.

I thought so at first as well. Then I thought about it for a while. Even before day 2 started, SM stated he thought there was great value in the middle rounds on the DL. It really sounds to me like he didn't see much difference in Ioannisis and Reed and Robinson, who really didn't produce in Alabama.
