After looking at the Jags schedule, I can see them getting to 8-8. Those other teams will likely be right around 8-8 as well. Close call to me, but the odds are in your favor that Atlanta or NYG will be better than 8-8.
That Jacksonville would have a better record than Dallas, Atlanta and NY Giants. I only had to give hime 2-1 odds. LOL. He is a Jags fan but he must not like money...

The problem with betting $$$ with buddies, esp close ones is 1) usually they don't pay up or 2) feel guilty taking $ and settle for like a dinner or case of brew bet. Best thing to do is for your friend to send me the $500 and you the $1000 and I'll send the money to the winner, when the season is over. Small brokerage fee is required
The Jags kind of suck. That is why it is a bad bet. Their offense is horrible and I'm not sure the defense will be any better.
Also betting family can be challenging. Two seasons ago, I bet my sister in-law (a Wisconsin native) a bottle of a nice red wine for the Packers-Seahawks (Fail Mary) game. She was so pissed off on the outcome of the game that my brother tried to talk me out of collecting the bet. To paraphrase him,
"Man, I can't believe you are collecting on the bet. You know that the Packers were robbed. I thought that you would do the right thing here".
I called B.S. on that. If the roles were reversed, my brother would have had no problem collecting. He does not forget who owes him on a bet. Anyhow, I collected and they still invite me over for dinner to this day. I'll see if she's up for another bet since both teams meet again in week 1.
Your buddy is not very bright.
Not even considering the teams or their projections it is a bad bet.
If you took 4 teams all being identically equal, you got 3 and he got 1... Then those odds alone for sports betting are 8-1.
Now factor in the 3 teams you have are all projected better than his one.... It is a full proof bet.
The defense got better just by the hiring of Gus Bradley in my opinion. The guy brings a no non-sense attitude to that defense. He also brought in players that know what he demands by bringing some ex-Seahawk players in. Should help to get some of the young guns to listen pretty quickly.
Also looking at the past 2 drafts I think they have done pretty good. On the defensive side of things not too much from this past draft other than Colvin was considered a 2nd round pick before his injury so knowing they probably don't win a Super Bowl this year it makes sense to stock up on talented players that have dropped some. Telvin Smith is on the small side but has speed to burn and pretty darn good in coverage.
The year before that getting Cyprien was pretty darn good value in the 2nd. Again a player needing some time to develop but has talent out the wazoo. I think he will be in that top-10 safety talk this year.
Offensively it really is like they had 2 very high end 1st round picks. Joeckel didn't even get a chance to play last year so getting him and now Bortles (probably rawest of the 1st round quarterbacks but possibly has the highest ceiling). They also got some pretty decent receivers to build with that whole unit. Again this is why I don't think they will record wise be that great this year. They do however have the foundation laid with some young potential especially for the offense for the next 3-4 years.
Jags have hope is what they have...yes, they have made some nice draft picks, but they have also lost good players via FA, suspensions, etc. so they tend to take two steps forward only to take a step or two backwards. Chances are Henne will start until the season is in the toilet (if it goes that route) or he's ineffective...but in either case Henne or Bortles, the only proven guy on the other end of those passes is Mercedes Lewis imo...OL is still going to be shaky and RBs are nothing special either.
If they really want to turn it around...go after Suh to shore up the interior of the DL, and get a #1 WR...as built
I think .500 will be a good season this year.
