Just to add a stat; The highest ranked position in WAR is of course....2B. They are ranked 12th. Lowest is SS at 27th unless you count DH where we are 14th.....out of 15 teams. I counted OF as one and not individually.

Eric Thames is still available, too.

Astros wanted no part of him, so he went to play Korean baseball.

...Christ. I still remember idiots on the old ESPN M's board talking about what a great trade it was for Delabar, even though it was just trading dog shit for cat shit...though, actually, Delabar went on to play marginally well for a couple of years.

Another losing trade for Z. Quelle surprise!

It was the highlight of that year's trade deadline for the M's, I believe.

I remember that deal all so well. Same stuff said on old CBS site. Never liked it. We had plenty of hackers in Tacoma that were just as good....as bad...at the time.

Delabar became an all star the next year.

Sadly the OF isn't even where the most glaring holes are. You are essentially getting nothing from the SS and DH positions. The SS batting avg is last in the majors by a good 30 points. The OF looks amazing compared to that. It's a essentially a 7 man lineup every night which makes being only a game under .500 pretty impressive.

Agreed, but you can win with low hitting SS if he plays great defense, I know I am not describing ours, but your hitting has to come from DH and OF. No excuses. I mean how many championships did ARod win when playing SS? Same goes for catcher. Jones can be a factor with his base stealing which has improved recently, but you need either an Olympic relay team in your outfield creating havoc on the bases or some legit pop (or combination of both preferred.

Looking back, the last top 5 pick of an OF was 2008 with Raben. I didn't count last year because too early to tell if we find a gem and I didn't count Ackley because he was drafted as an OF even though that is where he played due to injury but was always considered a 2B until he wasn't.

Because I was bored, I looked up our drafts from 2000-2008 and there has only been 1 player taken in the top 10 picks of those drafts that has ever played a role for the Mariners and that is..........Saunders. There has been more in the 2009 draft alone (Ackley, Seager, Jones, Franklin) then in the 9 previous drafts combined. Sad. And you have to ask yourself as a true fan, would those 4 even be up if we had a real MLB team? Seager I would say yes, but three others may have never been called up or if called up would they have stayed with their respectively bad numbers?
