Roller Coaster Rodney is now the Mariner's single season record holder for saves...
that is amazing to me. I've watched almost every game this year and I cringe every time he comes into the game. When Sasaki came in I was confident... congrats to Rodney.
I just went to both players' baseball-reference pages and compared various stats from Sasaki's 2001 and Rodney's 2014 season and it might surprise you to know that a lot of Rodney's numbers from this year are better than Kaz's numbers from 2001. For example, Rodney's 2014 ERA is roughly half a run lower than Sasaki's 2001 ERA was. Looking at just the basic stats, the biggest advantage that Sasaki's 2001 season had over Rodney's 2014 season is in walks. Kaz walked just 11 hitters in 2001, whereas Rodney has already walked 28 hitters with 10 games to go. It's the walks that make it hard to believe that Rodney now has the saves record.
Must seem different because of the circumstances. Kaz could blow a save and it was no big deal in 01.
I was thinking the same thing. The 01 team went through the season in a breeze without worry about a playoff spot. This year's team however is under a lot of pressure and a blown save can make a difference.
