Talking about Freddy's Lopez interview got me thinking...

Who are your most hated, loved Giants of all time? I mean guys who actually did an OK to good job, but there was SOMETHING that just rubbed you the wrong way.

In no particular order...

Freddy Sanchez
Bengie Molina
Candy Maldonado

...

I forgot what Candy did so he sits well with me. Although I was pretty young at the time and any guy with the name Candy sounded cool.

A.J. Always fucking A.J. Not for the trade, which has been discussed ad nauseum, and I have, reluctantly, sided with the rational brain trust on that one. Just, really fuck that guy for being such an asshole. I was embarrassed to root for him. Not during his playing days, but Brett Butler broke my heart, too.

Brett Butler

I understand the hatred for BB, but I still picture him laying down a great, open-stanced bunt down the 1B line and being half way to 1st before the pitcher/catcher even react to the ball.

I don't think there was a specific incident for the Candy-Man, he just always struck me as a liability on the team. He would hit 2 HRs in a game that we were already up by 5, then go 0-29 over the next week.

Definitely Butler makes that list. Kent too, for his snarky bullshit and becoming a doyer. Hershiser for his 98 season with us but still a doyer. AJ, for reasons mentioned. Atlee Hammaker for the ASG appearance, Solomon Torres, Cruz Jr for dropping the ball, Estes for his chicken dance off second base, and Durty for being soooo durty and inconsistent.

Beat me to it.

Him and Robby were the epitome of a 1-2..

After I heard all the gushing he did after signing with those sucktards, it really was a shock to this young fan's system. Up til that point, I believed every player loved the Giants.

Now I'm the bitter, cynical man you see before you ...curse you Brett Butler! :shakes fist:

Fond memories of many of those bunts starting comeback rallies...

RoRo deserves a mention as a hated Giants hated even further by his comments to the media

Huh???

Although Maldonado had statistically good seasons in San Francisco, he was involved in one of the most infamous plays in Giants history. In game 6 of the 1987 National League Championship Series, he lost Tony Peña's 2nd inning fly ball in the lights. This play resulted in a triple for Peña. Peña scored on a sacrifice fly for the only run of the game, which the Cardinals won to tie the series at 3 games each, before going on to win Game 7.

But, he will always be loved for another game with the Cardinals, when Will Clark slid into Ozzie Smith pretty hard and started a fight. Clark ended up getting ganged up on until Candy left the dugout and socked Ozzie in the face, ending it.

AJ qualifies as a "Hated" Giant, but how does he fall into the "Loved" Giants portion?

Oh, it had to be both? My apologies. I read it as "Hated/Loved" not "Hated that were also Loved or once Loved." The thread did seem a little redundant until now. Ummmmmm... I don't know. He did have an OPS of .729 at a position of need (maybe I should be angrier with Mike Matheny's brain) that doesn't normally provide a lot of offense. I'm sure some people liked him. Of course, considering his OPS was .824 the year before probably then immediately rubbed them the wrong way. I don't know, cal. Fuck. I always really liked Donnell Nixon even though he was terrible. Does that count?

You can post whatever you like :)

I am looking for guys like Freddy (major contributor to the WS team and an over-all good player, BUT openly loves the hated dogs) or Mo (carried the team during many a losing season, but then held the team hostage in the mid of a pennant run).

Kent works, but does not make my list right out of the gate. Butler works, but the hatred for him came post-Giants. RoRo kinda works, but he also fails in the loved aspect.

This category to me can only fit one guy perfectly: Teh Lord, Mr. Bonds

The loved part is obvious. And so is the hated.

Overall, I think most professional athletes are full of themselves to the point that it would make it difficult to like them, completely.

Bonds was a miserable bastard that's why. He was way worse than most of the guys we are 'hating' in this thread.
