Morton Hip Surgery

This one came out of nowhere. Charlie Morton had hip surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip, and the injury was diagnosed LAST OFFSEASON. Estimates for his recovery time vary between 4 months and 6 months. In the past, such estimates have been too short in most cases. Thus, the need for another starting pitcher becomes even more acute.

According to the article, NH has said that Morton's surgery will NOT affect the team's decision on whether to pick up Maholm's option. (That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.)

Interesting question. It seemed strange on the surface that the Pirates would fire an award-winning training staff while keeping the entire coaching staff and keeping almost all of the front office (with several notable promotions). :eek2::eek2::eek2:

Given last year's injury bug, I don't find it terribly surprising that the training staff would be fired, award-winning or not.

Hmm, I didnt know you had a labrum in your hip, when I first saw labrum surgery I wasnt happy, but I guess this wont affect him long term.

Well if this is only 4 months... He is ready to in February... if it 6 months he is ready to go in April...

Plus you know that if he has to take it easy on the hip he can still be in the weight room and working with trainers on getting his arm in shape...

The way the season shakes out you do not have to have 5 starters the first time or two through the rotation....So if Morton has to stay in extended spring training or make a couple of starts in the minors before he is ready to play for the Pirates this is not that big of a deal.

I guess we will not know until we get half way through spring training to see if he is just tossing from flat ground ... or if he gets to get up on the mound... and actually get to pitch in a spring training game.... Spring training is only a few days away

Which is why I thought this needed a bump...Because we can soon see what the status of Morton might be...
