Absolutely. I don't think it's all about the money with Kirk. I also think he must feel some sense of loyalty to Gruden. Jay put his career on the line when he named him the starter.

I like that line of thinking. Good point on the Gruden loyalty. Although he might have some for Shanny too since Shanny drafted him and propped him up when no one else was. So if Shanny goes somewhere and throws a huge deal at him....

Seems like KC likes it here and he's taken the time to learn the system. He could be doing himself a disservice by leaving and starting in a new system. Do you guys think that factors in at all in this process?

I think KC is a smart guy. I believe he knows his limitations and how this system accentuates his strengths. So yes, I do think it will be a factor in his decision.

I still say he will be paid less than 17mil/season. We will see if I am wrong.

Come on man... get real. Kirks strengths would fit into about 65% of the offenses in the league. If he maintains even close to his current level of play, he could be a fit in quite a few places. So you seriously think we are going to get him for less than what ANY other starting QB not on his rookie deal is making??

Yea, if the best we are willing to offer Kirk is the $15 million I think you want to cap him at.. they wont tag him. And next year we will be celebrating the 3rd round draft pick we MIGHT get for him as a compensatory pick.

Indeed it could be a factor, but as pointed out by another poster, he could also work well in about 65% ( his number not mine) of the offenses in the league. That too could very well play a part in his decision.

NP - then they franchise tag him. However - I truly believe that it won't come to that. Just because he might fit into other systems doesn't mean that he would want to go elsewhere. There are many factors that will motivate a player to stay with his current team. Assuming Cousins gets a fair deal (almost a given) he isn't going anywhere.

Very true. I assume he's viewed as a leader on this team and is extremely respected. Can't just walk into that on another team as well. Maybe I'm being naive and hoping KC gives the Skins a better deal just because of these things.

The only offense he and everybody else in the league knows he works well in is this one. That can be said about every good QB in the NFL. The QBs do not want to find out if they fit into other systems and the GMs do not want to find out either. They each want their guy. There is a reason good QBs are usually married to systems and the coach that brought it.

It depends what you mean by a better deal. If you are looking for them to say sign him for $14 M / yr avg or less - dream on. However - your pt may be well taken in the sense that Cousins won't likely ask for some ridiculous amt or hold out for an extended time. A deal that puts him on par with other recent QB signings should be adequate.

Redskins & Cousins BLOCKBUSTER deal coming | Cover32

As much as the Redskins organization loves Cousins quarterback play and his leadership, I would imagine the Redskins and Cousins can work out a blockbuster deal that would make him apart of the Redskins for almost the rest of his career.

If both parties can work out a deal, my prediction for the deal would be a seven year extension for a total of $165 million with $65 million of it guaranteed with a $20 million dollar signing bonus.

OK as much as I want us to resign Cousins.... even I would have to be in the mood to choke the living shit out of Allen and SMGM if they did a deal like that!!

Why did the Post even post this garbage question, much less answer it?

I mean these are the same people that asked whether wed rather have kirk cousins or aaron Rodgers for the next 5 years. I mean on what planet is that any kind of serious journalism.

Imo it'd be naive to say he can't pull a foles. That's certainly not out of the question. But I'm also not going to bet that he does flop like that. At this point you have to pay him and a decent amount at that. Ideally you keep it to limited guaranteed money like other teams have done and make it easy to get out of but worst case you franchise tag him. At this point we really can't afford letting him leave and he's going to get paid.

Cause there be folks, who no matter how well Kirk does, will always think Griffin got shafted and he would be our "Franchise QB" if we gave him half the support we gave Kirk.

Kinda makes me wonder, if Kirk had started in 2013 as Shannahan apparently wanted, where might his game be now?

Does make ya wonder. What if we had never traded the picks for rg3 and still grabbed kirk in the 4th and let him sit a year or 2. Of course that might mean more Shanahan which I don't love but would've been interesting to see play out. And probably less painful lol.

No way this is going to happen unless it converts to a year to year after year 3.

I am with you shark. I don't buy this fanpost... but this is exactly the kind of garbage contract I am worried about. But in SMGM I will trust. I dont think he will allow this to happen.

The more I think about it, the more I would like to see the tag put on Cousins. I know it hurts us next year wrt the cap as well as other potential areas), but I want to see more from him in training camp and the first half of next season, before signing him to a long-term, big $$$ deal that he would have showed by then that he deserves. It looks like the non-division schedule will be filled with playoff teams. IF he performs well the first 6-8 games...then start working out a great contract.

Exactly, why I am convinced that he gets the tag. He and his reps will want to strike a big deal, because now is his moment, next year offers no guarantees. I've read all of the comments about his fit here and the possiblity of some sort of loyalty discount.......all very possible factors, but I can actually see a scenario where, both sides would take the position that all of those other things are fine and dandy, but biz is biz.

I can sympathize with these sentiments, but the tag will really dig into our cap space. Also, KC, and his agent, do not want the tag applied. He should really want to lock in an extended contract this year. As you have pointed out, who knows about next year. He will come back down to earth next year so he may lose value by waiting.

I beleive they do come to an agreement after the season, for a 4-5 year deal, with a generous signing bonus but a way out for the team after year 3. This will keep our cap for the first few years fairly intact.

Where did this idea of seven years come from?

Last one I saw that long was 2011.

Those kinds of contracts never work out for the team. It provides a lack of incentive for the player to improve. Look at all the big contracts of that nature...none have worked out. Hell...Vick had two of them.

And maybe this is exactly what will happen? As long as the deal is fair and it doesn't financially devastate this franchise for the next decade (in the event that KC turns total bust), then I could certainly warm up to it.

This article about KC makes me start really warming up to it. Everyone ahould take the time to read if you already haven't.

Nothing is improbable about Kirk Cousins’s rise

Guy just gets it. Totally puts in the work and seems like he is doing everything humanly possible to succeed.

Serious question.. Do most NFL QBs train themselves mentally, emotionally, physically like KC does? Is this the norm for an NFL QB? I am thinking not to this degree. Sounds like Manning/Brady type of stuff he is doing.

I have been on record in the past as saying he is a career backup. I hope (and believe) I will be inserting food in mouth a year from now. I THINK our prayers have been answered friends. RG3 should really take a hard look at what KC has done and he may still have a chance to have an impactful career somewhere.
