Looked it up, used to happen all the time in the old days (1931-1980), but then only 1988 and 2012 since

Wild card rounds make it much more random, in the old days the best team (usually the Yankees) won the pennant and was immediately in the WS. And they had a ton of MVPs like Dimaggio and Berra and Mantle in that time
