The hot stove has turned frigid. Can you throw another log on that thing to get it going? Pitchers and catchers is only like 6 weeks away and there are a LOT of big names still out there.Posted in the NL West thread, but it looks quiet, so I'll add it here:

Report: Giants reach 1-year, $15 million deal with 9-time All-Star Justin Verlander
The three-time Cy Young winner will turn 42 in February.www.yahoo.com
Not sure how much he has left in the tank at this stage. It’s reminiscent of when the Giants signed Randy Johnson at the end of his amazing career. If he’s healthy, at least you know he’s in the right ballpark to get the best results. Not a bad roll of the dice on a 1 year deal. If he’s going, you might be able to flip him for a prospect at the deadline, too. Very low risk move. There has been talk about this transaction in the Giants' forum.
We aren't expecting much from the team this year but are excited to have even an aging Verlander join the rotation.

Imho, if he gets 15 starts and/or eats 100 innings, it will be a successful sign. Exposing all the Giants young pitchers to him alone almost makes the contract worth it. But he also puts asses in seats and MIGHT be able to be flipped for SOMETHING at the deadline.right, the thing about these signings is that there is a chance they have a resurgence for some length of time... if he does, then they will be seen as geniuses... if he doesnt, well, he wasnt expected to do much anyway...
but even his not much... he should still eat innnings every game he actually pitches...

If he never pitches for us (gets hurt in ST), all it will have cost us is 15M, and I don’t give a shit about MLB owners having to dole out cash. That doesn’t affect me in the slightest.
A million bucks a start? Glad it’s not my moneyImho, if he gets 15 starts and/or eats 100 innings, it will be a successful sign. Exactly. It isn’t our money. The Johnsons are making money hand over fist with the cove site, so I am not crying for them. And it isn’t like the price of a beer at the games will go up based on this signing.A million bucks a start? Glad it’s not my money
Some of you have said that Verlander brings more to the team than just his pitching and I agree with that. He’s a guy who has been there and can pass on a lot of his knowledge to the younger pitchers. He’s will bring his presence to the team and his credibility……….I wish he could play 1st base thoughExactly. It isn’t our money. The Dodgers effectThought this was interesting:
“The Padres, Twins, Cardinals, Braves, Brewers and Marlins have yet to sign a free agent to a fully guaranteed big league deal. Several others — Mariners ($3.5MM), Rockies ($9.75MM), Rays ($8.5MM), Pirates ($8MM) — have spent under $10MM in total. That’s one full third of the teams in MLB whose combined free agent expenditures total $29.75MM — or just barely more than Max Fried will earn annually with the Yankees.”
So few MLB teams even seem to be trying to compete anymore. It’s really bizarre.
That was my initial thought as well but I do wonder how much of this is the network deals that went south with so many teams too with the company whose name I cannot remember at the moment. The Dodgers effect
The big spenders this Winter are the Mets, Dodgers and Yankees. And(what do you know?), those were 3 of the last 4 teams standing this year.I think the Dodgers and their super team, while scooping up all the cream each year is PART of it. But I also think that teams will essentially get their money no matter what, so why bother spending money?
It comes from having an ownership group that WANTS to win. And being able to utilize non-baseball incentives to attract players. The three teams you mentioned can offer marketing opportunities to players that the Pirates can’t compete with. Those three teams also have owners that WANT to win, so squeezing every dollar out to get max efficiency is not really the main point. The big spenders this Winter are the Mets, Dodgers and Yankees. It would seem the Blue Jays still feel like they have a chance at landing Sasaki.

LOL. It’s funny that there was even a real dialogue about this. I guess SD was a dark horse, but he was always going to the Dodgers. Toronto was great as a “pretend” destination. Nobody really wants to play there. Is anyone really surprised?
