Detroit did set the MLB record for strikeouts by starting pitchers this year. They set the record for strikeouts in a 5 game series against Oakland with 57, and Verlander just set the record for most consecutive K's with 6 in a row this game.
Fun Fact -- the AL record for most consecutive strikeouts in a regular season game is -- 9 by Detroit #4 starter Doug Fister against KC last year.
In the end -- all the strikeouts in the world don't matter if you cannot score any runs.
Besides, pitchers duels, unless you are in the stadium watching the game, tend to be boring.
I am rooting for a rash of extra inning games, as I want both teams bullpens spent going into the W.S.
That won't matter if it is the Tigers D.
Eventually that pen will have to be called on, regardless of how peerless Verlander, Scherzer and company are.
That bullpen is the weakest of any team still standing. I have felt this since the beginning of the season and it was merely hammered home Sunday night. Benoit is Valverde without the mustard. Rondon would have been a big help, but he's out for this series and likely the WS should the Tigers advance.
Both pitchers are doing a damn fine job. I expected Verlander to have a good/great game. I didn't expect to have Lackey doing the same thing. Watching the first inning I was scared a little bit because I assumed that was what the rest of the game would be. Pleasantly surprised, but still one of the teams will have a breakout inning soon.
Did you say Napoli?
TOWNER!!!!
Long time man.
I sadly have to agree with you about your assessment of the Tigers pen. It seems like it went from over-used to exposed in a few short late season months.
However, going the route of the bullpen was the nicest way I could go, as I wanted to stop short of looking for injuries, which also would help any opponent going forward, as feelings of Dodger fans seem to already be at an all time low, and those folks need no fuel for that fire.
Not what I had expected.
Napoli had been cold all series and he got a pitch to drive and bam. Now we Lackey just needs to keep doing what he is doing. Than hopefully if the Sox still have the lead the bullpen can keep it.

Got ya BigD. You're too classy of a guy for that tactic.
I wouldn't object though, if someone pulled a "Samson" on Boston. Let 'em keep what hair that they collectively have on them domes, but off with their scraggly beards...
