Made arrangements for my winter ice trip up into Minnesota. We are heading north January 15-18. The wife is accompanying me this year. Looking forward to a couple of days at Sah-Kah-Tay resort at Cass Lake hitting the perch hard and trying to get in on some walleye action in the evening. Also going to Upper Red or Blackduck Lake to meet a buddy in his ice castle and try to pick up some gills and crappie.

I love ice fishing and getting my wife to participate will make this my best trip ever. I can't wait to see the look on her face when I drive out onto the lake in my truck.

We are seriously thinking about moving to the Detroit Lakes area in the spring. Good job market, lower cost of housing en sech. And a lake every 50 feet or so.

Gawd!! I live in friggin' Kansas this year. All of my buddies up north are on the ice and have been for a while. Earliest ice in years. Next year I am going to fish every day.

When ice fishing what do you usually use for bait?

Bait depends upon what species you're chasing.

Depends on what we are after. Panfish I like to use fake baits. Plastics from J and S Custom Jigs ( These fellers here ) If they don't want plastics then I go with waxies. Walleye and jumbo perch is Minnows/dead minnows. Northern like bigger stuff, shiners and such.

It's awesome tech. We chase big pike and when you approach that flag waving around you never know if it's a 6 inch perch or something like this!

Been ice fishing a couple of times....after I retire, might go a couple more times, but for me ice fishing was a bucket list thing.

Enjoy husker and hope you load up the buckets with pearch. I fish for em hard after ice is out and they go into their spawn. And walley...best eating in freshwater. Good Luck.

One of the keys to ice fishing for pike anyway, is to have all of your type (tip-ups) in before the light breaks. At first light, the flags go off like fireworks. If you're getting out onto the ice at 8 or 9 in the morning, you've missed the show.
