BA's midseason top 100

Baseball Prospectus midseason top 50

both agree on Moncada as the #1 prospect. BA has Vlad Jr. at #2 whereas BP has him at #13. That bat could be pretty special especially if he sticks at 3rd. He's hitting .316/.409/.480 in the Midwest league at 18 years old. He has more walks than strikeouts.

That'll happen when you carry a 5.00+ ERA and a 1.488 WHIP through half of the season in AAA.

For such a highly touted prospect, his K/BB rates above A+ ball haven't been all that impressive. Still, age is a factor and he is about 5 years younger than the average AAA player. But he is giving up home runs and his walk rate's high. I still think he'll be good but I don't think he'll be an ace.

Chavis is currently hitting .270/.297/.486 (106 wRC+) in 118 PA since getting promoted to AA. He does need to draw more walks, but it's encouraging to see he's only struck out 17 times (14.4%). His strikeout rate was 22.8% in Salem before he got promoted.

bo bichette and vlad jr are going to terrorize the AL east within 3 years.

fucking jays killed it
If the Jays can turn Donaldson into another blue chipper they'll be set.

Interesting how few pitchers there are at the top of that list though. They'll probably have a premium on them going forward in trade talks.

Clint Frazier falls from #33 to #49, shows you what these rankings are worth.

Clint Frazier falls from #33 to #49, shows you what these rankings are worth.

Those rankings also include guys from this year's MLB draft. And some of the guys that passed him were guys that were drafted last year and have seen their stock skyrocket (i.e. A.J. Puk, Ronald Acuna).

It's not like Frazier doesn't have question marks, he's struck out a fair amount (21.3% in AAA, 28.6% so far in MLB) and some scouts have said his plate discipline can be erratic. Frazier's hit well at every level, but he hasn't really dominated any of those levels either.

MLB Rookie Profile: Clint Frazier, OF, New York Yankees

Is it really worth fretting over someone being ranked 49th anyway?

Not really, just goes to show that these rankings are a guide, not a bible.

In 2014 Baseball America had Gary Sanchez ranked #1 in the Yankee organization and Dellin Betances was #26, Betances finished 3rd in ROY voting that year.

That's why it's a better idea to look at different rankings rather than just one. There's always a level of uncertainty with prospects.

As for Betances, he was up and down as a SP in the minors, so I think that's why he was ranked so low. He had a career walk rate of 4.9 in the minors. The Yankees hadn't moved him to the bullpen until sometime around the 2013 season. The year before that, he had an ERA north of 6 and he walked almost a batter per inning in AAA, not to mention he had three different trials in AAA. That ranking doesn't look great now, but I can see why they were low on him at the time. There was some sense of prospect fatigue and he had just recently become a reliever.
