I am hoping the loss of Yeo is enough to even out the loss of Gonchar. Addition by subtraction is my thought process

This is a good move, I wanted the Flyers to scoop him up as well. I'm not a fan of the Martin signing though, 5 mil is a lot, and he had half the production of Gonchar with more games played. Martin is a better two way player but i'm relieved that these numbers go away:

Gonchar - Career vs Philadelphia 64games 15goals 36assists 51points -1
Martin - Career vs Philadelphia 37games 1goal 12assists 13points -3

You forgot to include an important factor in the equation. His number is:

87

And he loves playing your team:D

...and back to the topic. I like the Michalek signing...but I like the Martin signing even more, especially the numbers.

It was right on topic. Gonchar played alongside Sidney Crosby... now Martin will. I'm going to go out on a limb and say his offensive numbers are going to go up, even against your beloved team.

its not like he will be on the wing.

nyuk,nyuk

you know what im getting at. How many times have you seen a Gonchar slap shot from the point hammered home by sid down low? That's what i'm getting at. Martin will bring that type of game. He knows how to deliver the goods.

another point proven that its the Pittsburgh fans that involve CROSBY in every thread. Well I guess its goes without saying then...

Ovechkin > Crosby

Oh come on. You tryin to tell me you weren't excited last year to hear that Chris Pronger was going to be skating with Richards and Carter??? A slick, puck moving defenseman skating with two premiere forwards???

I was excited to have Pronger because he likes to smash people. I was already set on the smooth skating dman front with Timonen and Coburn. I dont really look at Pronger as a slick puck moving dman, he has a good solid outlet pass but he doesnt seem to be that slick of a skater.

I am not excited about playing Michalek at all, but I am excited that I dont have to see Gonchar 6 times a year on your power play.

Regardless I would feel excited for 2 solid dmen signing with my team, but coming from the other side Gonchar was a Flyers killer and I dont think it was because of Crosby. Gonchar to me was always the scariest player on your powerplay, not Crosby.

And much in the same mold, the Pens now have a similar setup. Goligoski and Letang are the pens smooth skating, puck moving D-men. Guys like Michalek and Orpik are the sandpaper and grit kind of guys, add in a guy like Martin, he kind of takes over for Sarge.

Paul Martin will never be what Sarge was to the pens powerplay, but then again, sarge will never be what Martin will be in the form of a two way defencemen, either.

The Penguins powerplay is going to eventually come under the control of Evgeni Malkin. Gonchar's departure will make that even more of a fact, instead of this game that Yeo and the pens played of shuffling him around every game. Along with that, Mike Yeo is no longer coaching the powerplay, which in my book, looks like a godsend.

that did not cross my mind. he is a great positional defenseman and has a bomb from the point. i do not care who he plays with. he is what he is and he is good.
