Got the Romo T-shirt from the wife for X-Mas...and a 2012 World Series hat from a friend. Now I can walk around town looking like a fair-weather douchbag. :)

BTW: I wonder how much the organization earned this Christmas. I counted 5 Giants-related gifts opened at my house. (add a book, another hat, and some Giants/Rocks tickets to those mentioned above).

Wow. You are extremely NN-esque today.

Entering the season, I slotted the Niners at 10-6 or MAYBE 11-5. They are 10-4-1 going into the last game, or, in other words, exactly where I expected them to be.

Only two teams can play in the NFC championship game each year. All the other teams in the league do not qualify as pretenders. We're the Packers or Saints last year pretenders, or teams that just happened to lose games to good teams?

They have 9 pro bowl players. More than any team in the league. They have almost zero chance of making the SB. Pretenders. Prep for 2013.

Further, did the Packers or Saints last year piss away a 28 point lead? Did either team get blown the fuck out in December on national TV?

Pretenders.

No way, I've seen the 88 team go 10-6 in the regular season and still turn it up in the the postseason.

This was an extremely difficult schedule and they are getting penalized for losing some tough games, they should get credit for winning some even tougher games, too (Packers, Bears w/ a new QB, NO, and NE)

The division isn't even a discussion if the replacement refs didn't colossally screw up and give Sea and extra win.

Re: 28 point blown lead, the lead actually worked against them.
The first two TDs were like Mota giving up 5 runs after the Giants took a 10-0 lead. The following 2 TD drives were aided by a number of favorable ref calls and desperation 4 down tries. They stopped Brady on 3rd down over and over and in a closer game, the Pats punt.

I agree that blowing a 28 pt lead in the 3rd should never ever happen but that lead didn't happen by accident, they dominated for 45 minutes of that game.

Their recent play is not inspiring at all and AZ is an important game now but if they get the division, I like them over the likes of Dallas/Chicago/Washington/Minny/ even Seattle at Candlestick.

No SB team has ever done that. Ever. You're also glossing over the debacle in Minneapolis and the two abortions vs. the Rams. Then, of course, there's the complete turd fests vs. the Giants and Seahawks. That's a whole lot of sustained fuckery to compare to two nice wins (@GB and @NE) -- and even the NE game should have an asterisk because of the epic collapse.

We will crush the Cards on principle Sunday. We will then beat the hapless Bears at home next week, before traveling to Lambeau for our season ending beat down. Feel free to remind me of these predictions.

I'm reminding!

They might still lose to the Packers but it will be in SF if they do. They beat them in WI this year (admittedly with a team that was playing better and healthier than the current one). They have a bye week to get healthier.

If they beat the Pack then they either go to Atlanta or host Seattle or Washington. SF isn't the best football team ever but they are on par with all the other contenders this year. If they don't win the Superbowl it won't be because they are 'pretenders'. It will be the short sample size. All 12 teams in the playoffs are good teams, any of them can beat any of the others.

If you're a Niners fan time to hope the same gods who brought the Giants their rings decide to bring them one.

That bye week isn't going to make a difference for Justin Smith, Mario Manningham, or Kyle Williams. And yes, the Viqueens served their purpose and will be curb stomped in Lambeau Sunday. So we do get a break and get the Fackers at the Stick on the 12th. Bye teams win about half the time.

Could the niners win? Sure. Will they? Unlikely. Contending teams don't have a resume of six shitfests on their regular season resume.

Again, feel free to remind me of how wrong I am if they should advance to the NFC championship in Atlanta.

p.s. Ackers should have been cut a month ago. Whoever we bring in to replace him could very well cost us a playoff game.

So wouldn't this apply to "non-Pretender" teams as well?

If anyone else were taking this stand, I think we would be a bit more apt to listen and not be so argumentative with the stance, but for you, of all people to be arguing his viemantly about how the team has no chance and that the season is over means you are either trolling or trying to be ironic.

The team has been decimated by injuries to key personnel this season. This s not an excuse, that is a fact of life in the NFL. It is, however, the facts. We are also not the only team to be hit by the injury bug. We have about a 25% chance of making the SB right now, and I will take that.

Hey man, you're probably not going to be wrong, the Niners have at best a 15% chance of winning the Superbowl. Pessimism is usually the 'correct' predictive stance, I've been known to get my share of shit for it relating to the Giants.

I'm just sayin', your Giants attitude is notably sunnier than your Niners one. Maybe because the Giants have been winning rings lately and the Niners have yet to.

Also, I've been seeing stuff that Justin Smith can indeed perhaps make it back on to the field...how does another week not help that? And Kyle Williams, the guy that killed your season last year, you miss that guy?

Also can't every team you'd consider a 'contender' point to a few losses? Not every loss is a 'shitfest'. In fact the Patriots would probably consider their loss to the Niners as a shitfest for their team, while you call it one for the Niners.

In other words, lighten up Nolan!

I'd argue the 1988 team did. Two blow-out losses, two losses where the offense could not score a touch down. Losing to the Cardinals after being up 23 - 0 in the third quarter. A near loss to the Saints after Walsh played "in-game revolving QB" with a comfortable lead. Quarterback swapping halfway through the season......

I'd guess you could argue the 1988 Niner's weren't really a contending team - they just got lucky to make the playoffs and got hot at the right time - and, of course, they barely won the superbowl.

I disagree on several points. You seem to be saying that injuries are the main reason we have very little shot at the SB. They aren't. Justin Smith was completely healthy for the Rams games, the Viqueen game, and the Giants game. They were relatively healthy for all of those shitfests. They lost those games because they played like shit. Crucial drops, blown coverages, shit game plans, bad personnel choices, and stupid penalties.

This is probably the most talented team in the NFL; that they won't contend for the SB is a shame. Again, contenders don't shit the bed six times in one year.

I hope I'm wrong, but the overwhelming majority of evidence says I'm not.

Justin has a very rare injury that doesn't heal without surgery. Rest isn't likely to make much difference from what I've read. And do I miss Williams? After watching Jenkins...yeah.

As for the difference between the NFL and the MLB playoffs -- night and day. In baseball anything can happen. In the NFL the dominant teams almost always win. Hence, the unlikelihood of the Niners getting there.

It's not about "a few losses," it's about complete and utter shitshows. Find me another team that has losses to bad teams plus blowout losses plus abortions of 28 point leads equal to or greater than the number six. Then explain how that team is a contender.

I don't think I'm convinced they shat the bed six times this year. Like I said, the Patriots game is probably considered by Pats fans to be their own shitshow. Can't be both.

Not every loss is a shitshow. Teams lose games, even contenders. And usually for the reasons I bolded above.

I don't have a dog in this fight, I'm not a Niners fan. It's just weird seeing you be so Nolanesque here. Like Nolan, who magnifies every little flaw in his teams and assumes they will always be the worst they can be, and who never considers that other teams have flaws too.

You said it yourself, they are the most talented team. So don't they have as good a shot as anyone? Every team in the playoffs has flaws at least as great as the Niners.

Plus what gp said above.

Now, as I mentioned, you'll probably be right, because the Niners have at least a 75% chance of not winning the SB, and you'll get to say you told us so. That's the argumentative strength of pessimism. Just surprising coming from you.

First I guess I'd have to ask you which of the 11 other playoff teams are contenders to you?

The NYGiants won the SB last year after a shitshow first half of the season. They won in 2007 vs an undefeated team. Why the negativity?
