Melky was a 250 hitter before PEDS. If he has a big year everyone will know he's using again. Same goes for Bartolo Colon.

Sorry to say this DaBolts, but if you don't like players on PED's, you should steer clear of professional sports. :(

I realize players in probably every sport use them. The ones we know about are the people who get caught. If they get caught they should pay a very stiff penalty.

We aren't talking about the Olympics in which a Romanian Gymnast had an All Around Gold Medal taken away from her because she took cough medicine.

Melky Cabrera knew the stakes were high coming into the season. He was going to become an UFA. He took a chance that nobody would catch him. I'm glad he was caught. It's too bad the drugs are so far ahead of the tests or more players would be caught. However, Melky Cabrera will always be known as a Drug user. Just like McGwire, Canseco, AFRAUD, Jason Giambi, Andy Pettite & Palmeiro who should be in jail for lying to Congress.

Random thoughts: I wonder how Posey would have gotten along with Bonds. My guess: not great. Very happy he is the face/leader of the franchise going forward.

2 Years, $16 million for Melky? I thought he'd get 1 year, $5 million + incentives. Shows what I know.

Did anyone really get along with Bonds? My feeling was only his elders who he respected a lot, and other black superduper stars he could relate to like Griffey.

After that he was either tolerated or actively disliked by most of his teammates wasn't he? #JeffKent #WillClark

So he gets caught, and gets a very nice raise.

Is this a great country or what?

I'd prefer first time offenders be diverted to an education program where they can learn the safe and most effective use of PED, as well as the steps to take to avoid future detection. Similar to the program Ryan Braun went through.

It may be the offseason, but GPalt is en fuego!!

I was going on a hypothetical scenario where 'I was in charge' or 'what I'd like to see' (if I ruled the world). I wasn't petitioning for anything. Like most unions I know of, I'm sure they would say what you said above.....except with worse language.....and I'd have a broken kneecap. :heh:

Now pay up on your monthly dues, it's past the 15th!!! ;)

Damn it all to hell...I thought I could get away with it....:spy:

Aw shadddup. You don't fucking know WHEN he was on PEDs. Maybe he was a "250 hitter" when he was USING.

Yawn. Move along here, nothing worth reading.

LOL

Two of the most bristly, hickish, sand-paper-for-personality players in the history of game. Not sure Bonds can be blamed for any of that...

Jeff Sullivan nails it re: Melkman's contract --

...the Blue Jays aren’t paying Cabrera to repeat his 2012, and they aren’t even paying Cabrera to repeat his 2011. According to our numbers, the last two years Cabrera has been worth 8.8 WAR over 268 games. If the Blue Jays were paying Cabrera to be that sort of player, they might’ve guaranteed $16 million over one year or $32 million over two years. They’ve opted for half that, and Cabrera has accepted.

Do you know what an outfielder needs to be to be worth $16 million over two years as a free-agent acquisition? Something in the general neighborhood of league-average. Even slightly worse than that, or league-average and injury-prone. Cabrera was that sort of player in 2009 with the Yankees, when he posted a 94 wRC+. He was just kind of average at everything. If Cabrera could be that guy for two years, the Blue Jays wouldn’t have made a bad investment, and if Cabrera could be better than that guy for two years, the Blue Jays would have made a solid investment.

I'm going with the "SabeySabes knows 100 times what I do" of this situation. B/c from here, it looks like 2/16 was a no brainer to bring him back.

He does, and so do some of us on this one. Why is it so hard for you to just accept that for non-baseball reasons Melky was never coming back?

And really those non-baseball reasons are still kind of baseball reasons...if clubhouse chemistry and avoiding distraction has any meaning at all (and doesn't the Giants recent history prove this is so?), it was a no brainer to NOT bring him back.

I see that argument, but I think it's far from proof. It's an opinion from the outside, and you may be right. But you're not necessarily right.

A fair point. The two reddest-asses of all time. But Bonds was plenty bristly too.

I never minded Bonds as the face of the franchise, especially when he was putting up 250 OPS+ seasons. I don't think Bonds and Posey would be buddies, but they'd appreciate playing together - I suspect.

I'm not sure I agree that Cabrera only needs to be league average to be worth 8M per. I think Sullivan is making a mistake in thinking the aggregated "realized performance" was what teams were paying Free Agents for. Other than that quibble, I think Sullivan is correct, the Blue Jays made a good baseball decision.
