AP- The fight that makes sense for only one reason – money – appears to be moving ever closer, according to online reports.

A boxing match between the retired Floyd Mayweather, one of the greatest boxers in history, and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, who has zero amateur or pro boxing matches on his record, is on the verge of being finalized, the reports say.

The Irish Sun quoted an anonymous source it described as close to McGregor’s Straight Blast Gym saying that the deal is complete. It had quotes from McGregor, but the McGregor comments did not acknowledge the Mayweather bout.

“The contract hasn’t officially been signed yet because of a third-party holdup, but all the details have all been agreed on,” the Sun quoted its source. “The fight could even be announced within two weeks.”

Given the anonymous nature of the quotes and a lack of confirmation from McGregor, who told the site he’s flying to Las Vegas to clear up his issues with the Nevada Athletic Commission stemming from a water bottle-tossing incident with Nate Diaz at a news conference in August prior to UFC 202, the fight doesn’t appear to be a sure thing just yet.

An ESPN report doesn’t say the fight is done, but it does directly quote Mayweather. He attended the Golden State Warriors-Oklahoma City Thunder game on Saturday, and told ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith that “we’re getting very, very close” to a bout.

It’s always wise to be skeptical, particularly when anonymous sources are concerned. There were literally dozens of reports that the Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight was complete in late 2014 yet it wasn’t confirmed until early 2015.

Neither UFC president Dana White nor Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe responded to messages left by Yahoo Sports.

Given the amount of money the fight would generate, it has to be considered at least possible that it gets made, even though McGregor has never boxed and Mayweather has never fought in MMA.

The odds will be interesting! But most interesting will be the trash talk.

I think it would be funny if the fight does happen and Conner gets a lucky punch and K.O. 's Mayweather. Or Conner gets rocked and goes full MMA and kicks his head off.
I would not pay for it but would watch on strikeouttv.

There is no doubt in my mind Mayweather just schools Mcgregor in boxing. He really would have to get a lucky KO, but no doubt Connor would hit him well at least a few times. Connor has shit endurance, i cant see him going 12, i even think Floyd knocks him out.

It's gonna happen because they're talking about it too much and the money is too high. And it will be boring because all Mayweather fights are boring.

Hell, if I were Mayweather and McGregor, I'd stage the entire fight. Mayweather dogs it for the 1st couple of rounds, even pretends he gets dinged, then just outboxes McGregor for the win. That way, Mayweather wins and McGregor can shit talk and say he got "this" close and just needs more time. Then they just book another fight for 3x the absurd amount of money the first one will bring in

Mayweather could make it last an entire fight. He can just evade anything Connor tries to do and land a few good shots a round. Probably mocking him in the meantime. If Connor gets baited into the mocking and goes all rage mode Mayweather will make quick work.

Would not pay to see this. Watched Floyd fight Pac and he is the world's most boring 'boxer'. He is a world class huger however. I will never pay to see Floyd be the world's most unentertaining entertainer.

Also screw McGregor too, will not donate money to a glorified charity boxing event.

Judging his ego, probably both, he will be filthy rich after.

Money grab, he makes like 5-10 million a fight, he's going to probably make around 50 million for the Floyd fight.

I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't even go back to the UFC after either.

Agreed. Connor is all about his brand and once he makes enough money he's going to tell the world "fuck you" and be done with fighting. Not that he won't drag it out a bit to squeeze every last dime out of it he can, and Dana will be following him like a puppy dog the whole way because Connor is their cash cow right now.

I don't think Dana cares anymore, he sold his shares.

It'll be WME following him around like a puppy dog now, Dana is filthy rich whether the UFC fails or not.

One thing not being discussed is the glove size difference. The padding on MMA gloves isn't there for the hands its there for the face and tissue of the opponent, to aid in not to tearing or cutting etc,...

Boxing gloves are harder to strike with and land due to the bigger surface area of the glove. The additional padding in boxing gloves will negate Connors power and basically make him a eunuch against someone with the world class boxing skills of Mayweather.

This is a money grab on both ends.

no thanks
